Neither the band nor its members aged particularly well - and they certainly aren't 'hard rock' or 'heavy metal' - but they were great fun at the time. An extra star for givining us Papa John Creach and Hot Sh!t (better known as Hot Tuna).

Sounds like a defunct airline too me.

Jefferson Airplane is one of the most OVERRATED bands ever!! They sound horrible to the Nth degree, Slick sounds as if she is ready to hurl at any moment! Avoid this noise maker band at all costs, please!

Lovin' it, like McDonald's.

Intense songs, good for large parties. An older group, but still relatively popular with the drug cultures.

Shouldn't they be on the "Classic Rock Band" list? They were ok, nothing great, imo.

Excellent band, but I wouldn't call them Heavy Metal. Acid rock would be a better category.

Little of their music is truly "heavy," but they were an important force in rock until about 1970, that's about the time they became overbearing and too self-important. Almost all of their Starship music is dreck, though "Miracles" was a decent ballad. They were a seminal San Francisco sound band, though I think Moby Grape and a few others were better at their peak than the Airplane were. Still, besides the big hits, they have quite a few other good to great cuts, and Surrealistic Pillow is a must have for fans of the era's music.

Jefferson Airplane has to be one of the most overrated groups, especially when compared to many artists on this list. The band's popularity was largely due to the presence of Grace Slick, and Jefferson Airplane's lone two recognizable singles were sung by her, namely Somebody to Love and White Rabbit. The rest of the group's work (full of psychedelic experimentation) sounds rather dated. The bottom line is that the compilation The Worst of Jefferson Airplane (1970) is all (and more) most people would want from this band.

if in any doubt, as to how good airplane were you should all drop a trip and listen to bathing at baxters!

GRACE SLICK IS THE BEST ROCK SINGER OF ALL TIME AND WITHOUT HERE THERE WOULD BE NO JEFFERSON AIRPLANE OR STARSHIP. SHE WAS THE FOCAL POINT AND THE GRAND LEADER OF BOTH BANDS; WHETHER PAUL KANTNER WANTS TO ADMIT IT OR NOT.THEY ARE ONE OF THE GREATEST BANDS OF ALL TIME.

This is one of the few great classic rock bands that I actually enjoy. One time Grace Slick was asked why they wouldn't go on tour, and she said their time was done, and let the stage be open for younger and hungrier talent. She said who were they to hog up the success. I really respected this, and I think the Rolling Stones and numerous other bands need to take heed, quit being so selfish and greedy and move on to retirement where your overheard asses belong ! Go Jefferson Airplane !

They suck.

An all time great rock banc. Great song writers, vocalists and attitude. Through the '70's and 80's things did change, and not always for the better, but still a very talented and unique group.
Jason1972 10/28/2002
With an excellent vocalist like Grace Slick, how could you go wrong?
Singer456 07/09/2002
I don't know how anybody can knock Jefferson Airplane. Gracie Slick was the greatest female voice in rock n roll history.

Great group, really good songs.

For a brief time, Jefferson Airplane became the mouthpiece for an entire subculture... a status not undeserved. However, when the "counter culture" finally emerged from its drug-induced high, Jefferson Airplane seemed strangely irrelevant. Never lacking musical competence, the group simply said all it really needed to say by the time the Summer of Love faded into autumn. Say what you want about subsequent incarnations of this band, but I like Jefferson Starship way more than their antiquated predecessor!
ellajedlicka21 10/29/2001
They were a very good band with Grace Slick. They have some pretty popular tunes from the late '60s. They were never one of my all-time personal favorites, but musically they were definitely a good band.

Come on now Ruby, how can you truly rate a song when you can't even get the title right?! Its OK to have an opinion, and this is the place for them... but neither you nor MadonnaGal manages to express an INFORMED opinion when it comes to Jefferson Airplane/Starship. Go, NOW, to the nearest CD rack and become someone who knows whereof he/she speaks! Better yet, go get jobs at Rolling Stone Magazine... They actually pay people to write the type of crap that both of you did right here for free! Anyway, I HAVE THIER ALBUMS, and Airplane sucks! Starship ROCKS!!!
Ruby 03/11/2001
As bad as Jefferson Airplane was, I had to give them a "two star" rating, so I can somehow indicate that Jefferson Starship was worse. OF course, this puts me in a quite a fix, if I need to rate separately the third incarnation of this band (which was just titled "Starship" -- and which was responsible for "We Built This City on Rock and Roll", one of the worst songs of all time).
crazy_byrd 02/24/2001
Well.....all I can say is THANK GOD it ain't Starship.
