Carl Alfalfa Switzer lived a tragic life. His acting wasn't very good when he was a child, but he still had a lot of charisma and was fun to watch. Unfortunately, he was a rotten kid in real life - not just mischevious but mean-spirited, and Darla, who played his girlfriend on occasion, was actually afraid of him. As an adult, he apparently tended toward violence, so his own early death isn't much of a surprise.

Carl Switzer had the potential of being a great clown when he portrayed Alfalfa in the Our Gang comedies. I liked the episode where Alfie vowed to be a woman hater, but the moment he saw Darla, he couldn't control himself. That cowlick was something else; he called it his personality, and went nuts (I'm ruined!) when Spanky cut it off to use for a mustache. However, when he screeches, the volume on my set almost always goes down. Overall, the Alfalfa character was a great contribution to Roach's Rascals.

Carl Switzer (Alfalfa) apparently was the group clown on and off the set. Had a few run-ins with the law in his later years and was shot to death by his business partner at the age of 31.
