The main tomboy of Our Gang was played by Mary Ann Jackson from 1928 (just before they were about to break into talkies) until 1931. (Add picture)

Mary Ann was the Jodie Foster type in the world of Our Gang. She was more of a puckish tomboy than leading lady, and wasn't overly sweet like most of the other Our Gang girls. There was an episode from 1930 called School's Out in which Miss Crabtree's brother was coming to visit his sister, but the Gang thought he was a potential husband. The kids, thinking they were going to lose their teacher, tried to discourage the man. A great scene featuring Mary Ann was when Miss Crabtree's brother was sitting on the steps next to Mary Ann, and when he asked her what her name was, she gruffly replied, My name's Mary Ann! It's something one would have to hear to know what I'm talking about. Sadly, Mary Ann Jackson did not stay in movies very long, and the Our Gang comedies was the only thing I've known her to star in. But she did an excellent job at such a young age.

I met Mary Ann in about 1990 in a Santa Monica bar. She was sitting by herself, dressed to the nines in a decidedly 50's style. I asked the bartender what her story was and he told me who she was. She would come in on weekends and have a few quiet drinks by herself. I was always a fan of hers and asked to buy her a drink. She accepted wearily and I did not impose myself on her too greatly. After a second drink, she started to open up a bit and she spent the next two hours regaling me with stories of our gang and tales of old Hollywood. She hated the hole scene. The studios tried to groom her for feature pictures when she outgrew our gang but it didnt work out for her. She said she had a sister who was an actress that made some movies. She dropped out of movies and worked til retirement at the Mays Co. in downtown LA. I cant remember a more memorable evening than that spent with this charming lady.
