They split up because Dennis Quaid cheated on Meg Ryan for a longer period of time. As someone else said, their marriage was unhappy for at least half of it. At least for Meg Ryan it was, I'm sure Dennis Quaid felt it was okay to cheat on her. Combine that with his drugs and alcohol problems in the beginning of their relationship and I'd say this gets one star. Should have ended long before it did.

divorced. and from what I have heard they were not happy half way through. what can you do but move on as they did. they had one kid together a son and seem to be doing a fine job raising him.
