Not only the best televised portrayal ever done, but absolutely perfect. I agree, Watson as he is shown is preferable to Nigel Bruce, though he was a wonderful comic character for the era. I preferred the series to the novels and stories, which is odd for me. They are more interesting in this manner than as Sir Arthur told them.

Holmes was the character Jeremy Brett was born to play. Maybe too well: his Holmes alternates between alert mania and a sickly/depressive melancholy, just as the ill-starred Brett did in real life. After seeing Brett's incarnation, the more physical, almost swashbucking quality of Basil Rathbone just doesn't cut it for me anymore. Definitely my favorite among the shows on PBS's Mystery!

Very, very good. Easily the best dramatized Holmes and Watson ever made.

Excellent... THE consummate Sherlock Holmes. Jeremy Brett's Sherlock Holmes is analytical, arrogant, impatient, vain, and sarcastic.... Both actors who played Watson during the 6 year run of this series produced an intelligent, loyal and Brave counterpart for Holmes... far better than the bumbling Nigel Bruce characterization.

Jeremy Brett was another actor who died before his time. That said, he played an excellent Holmes. Great renditions of Conan Doyle's stories. I hope they re-run this series in the future.
