Got their butts kicked at Arnhem. It's interesting one of irishgit's uncle's served with this unit. During Market Garden, the 1st Airborne lost 8000 men.

I may be over-rating them due to some familial pride, but this was a damn fine outfit. Thrown away at Arnhem in support of Montgomery's folly of Market-Garden, they nonetheless turned in one of the finest performances of the war. Johnny Frost's stand at the north end of Arnhem bridge, undermanned, outgunned and ultimately out of anything but courage was one of the great feats of arms at the war. One of my uncles served with Frost, and went into the bag at Arnhem until the end of the war, so you can forgive a little family pride.
