Smith is a very entertaining personality and always provides humorous and intelligent insight. He may be abrasive if you're not used to the shouting style he has but overall I think he does a good job.

I chose not to listen to his mindless banter that makes his head furrow through out each discussion. If I wanted to hear an angry black man yelling at me I would go hang out on the upper east side of NYC. Quite frankly, Stephen A. is a loud and proud racist.
Braves 01/16/2007
Anybody who likes this guy is drunk and out of their mind. He has absoulutly no idea what he talks about, he doesnt even know anything about basketball and that is his sport
markji 01/10/2007
We are really not that interested in your anger at the world, Stephen. Self-important wannabee who would be best-served by taking a course in grammar.
twansalem 07/21/2006
He's extremely annoying, and he needs to stop yelling all the time. One of the many reasons why TNT's basketball coverage is far superior to ESPN's coverage.
Ih8rateitall 05/24/2006
Quite Frankly sucks, and his tv ratings are awful. Here's a little tip SAS, stop correcting your guests, don't constantly interrupt your guests, and lower your voice. I bet I can hear SAS with my tv on mute!
jazzackfl 04/04/2006
Just one of the coolest and funniest sports analysts of all time.
Oyeah487 02/26/2006
Believe it or not, this guy once was an immense talent. His basketball acumen is very high. He was very insightful and funny during the NBA draft and can entertain and make his point...when it comes to basketball. Now, that he has branched out with his own show; he has taken it upon himself to PRETEND to know everything. Also, the yelling has gotten a bit out of control and does tend to outshout a person in an arguement. On the point of black sportscasters, Michael Wilbon and David Alderidge are two excellent personalities. What people SHOULD care about is substance. But some of these reviews, as you can see, are racially charged both positively and negatively. He needs to stick with basketball or actually learn something about other sports. He can be very funny with his sarcasm, but his show can sometimes be just banal.
gamerman 02/24/2006
McGowen, by saying "so many blacks" you are doing the same thing you accuse Stephen A. Smith of being, a racist. I'm not calling you a racist, but that was a bad generalization that all blacks act like SAS. Jim Brown and David Alderidge are good examples of good sports commentators. I can't give this guy more than 2 stars, when he wants to he can be funny and be a good interviewer. But for the most part, he is a loud, arrogant jerk. Listen to how his tone changes when someone disagrees with him, he won't let the other person get a word in. This guy's ego was already huge before, now since he has a show his ego is out of control! I think most of the people who call Stehen A. Smith a racist just aren't ready for a black guy on t.v. I don't think that Stephen A. Smith attacks white athletes either. That's like me saying Jim Rome attacks black athletes on his show. SAS just has a different style, I just don't like how he thinks he is always right. SAS, quite frankly you need to tone your attitude down! I bet he refers to himself in 3rd person too! SAS quite frankly, 2 stars for you!
timotte 02/10/2006
Will someone please tell him that he is not a player in the NBA!!!
weirdharold211 2 02/03/2006
Proof that all you need to get on TV these days is to be an angry loud mouth. (Thanks, but Jim Rome is one too many of these jerks on the air already.) I can't believe that ESPN basically kicked a class act like David Aldridge to the curb for this clown.
McGowan 01/14/2006
YECCCCCCCHHHHHHHH!UGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHH!Bombastic.Over -the-top.Arrogant.Petulant.Like so many blacks in his line of "work",he's a racist who throws the race card in your face, any second. All style and no substance.Bombast and fury, signifying nothing.Full-blown delusions of grandeur.A glittering jewel of colossal ignorance.
deedee49 12/31/2005
Quite frankly, Stephen A. Smith is a refreshing change to your BASIC ESPN-type sportscaster. He has a FRESH APPROACH and it isn't fed to him through a teleprompter. I think it's sad that so many people want to categorize this talented talk show host as an angry Black man!!!! Why does a black man that isn't from your basic but bland cookie-cutter sportcaster mold have to be labelled angry? Why NOT describe him as a man who is passionate in his beliefs, a man who vigorously states his case. Stephen A. Smith......Keep on doing what you're doing....I don't think the world would ever have seen the side of Allen Iverson that you showed us. For that interview alone, I am appreciative that you have an outlet. Thank you, Stephen A. Smith and I pray that 2006 brings you good health and happiness and that you keep on bringing us more original programming.

I find reporters like Stephen A. Smith to be really annoying. Smith puts more effort into how he reports something, instead of what he is reporting. He always has to be loud with what he is doing, and has to pick either one extreme or the other. It feels like he exaggerates everything in order to give himself more exposure.
Dukesucks 12/26/2005
Hey Stephen A. Smith QUITE FRANKLY YOU NEED TO GET OUT OF ESPN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
bagman62 12/14/2005
As a 65 yr old retired cop from Brooklyn,I am unabashedly a sports junkie for life. You,re interviews on "Quite Frankly"are treasures. That show is the faster hour on television and you do a great job-good questions,in fact, questions that I,myself, would ask. Then you allow your guests enough time to answer and expound.Plus you make them appear to be very much at ease with you-Just great! And you will never have David Stern lecture you on how to dress.Keep up the excellent job!!
kegtapper 12/09/2005
really doesn't tell us anything we haven't heard. Very angry, with little substance to talk about. Same ol... same ol..
1Moe 11/09/2005
Stephen A. Smith is an individual and shouldn't be compared to other black commentators just because he is black. He has a style of his own, and for the people who like it, Great, and if you don't, don't watch, trust he won't care, he is tooo busy living out his dreams and being a success. To go from local to national without having to be phony and do the shuffle kiss butt dance is refreshing. And for those who think he is angry.. try passionate...it's too typical and easy to just write him off as some angry black man. Trust me you can't make it as far as he has by just be an "angry black man", but rather a driven, educated, and articulate individual.
mualum78 11/02/2005
Most of the time SAS is pretty knowledgeable, but his opinion of Ben Roethlisberger's talent is ALL WET. He stated that Ben can't be a top rated QB until he starts throwing 300 yards a game. He also stated that anybody could quarterback the Steelers with the RB's they have. Hmmm. Ask Tommy Maddox about the Jacksonville game. BR might not be throwing 300 yards per game, but he has a touch on the football that is uncanny. He is a leader on the field and has earned the respect of his teammates. He can run with the football, he reads defenses and he throws with accuracy. SAS seems to think that all it takes to be a QB is to throw the ball 300 yards a game. That's not all it takes, obviously. Perhaps SAS ought to stick to basketball or something he knows more about, because, as I said, I feel he's all wrong about Ben Roethlisberger and what it takes to be an NFL QB.

I FIND MR. STEPHEN A. SMITH A HIGHLY INFORMATIVE SPORTS COLUMNIST. HE IS AN ELOQUENT, DOWN TO EARTH MAN WHO SPEAKS ON SPORTS TOPICS WITH DEEP PASSION AND ENTHUSIASIM. I THINK IS IS A VERY HANDSOME MAN WHO IS TRUE TO HIS BLACK RACE AND IS REPRESENTING THEM WELL AS WELL AS BEING AN OUTSTANDING INFLUENCE FOR YOUNG BLACK KIDS WHO ARE LOOKING UP TO HIM. I WISH HIM CONTINUED SUCCESS IN THIS FIELD AS WELL AS EVERYTHING ELSE HE DESIRES.
bartman 10/13/2005
Screamin' A. Black as I wanna be. Ahmad Rashad school of kiss the black athlete's ass and get the scoop once you're his buddy. Despised by his peers for lack of substance.
bill1948 09/22/2005
This big mouth is a died in the wool racist. You,ll never hear him critisize a black athlete no matter how contemptable, yet he finds reason to find fault with most of the white ones. God forbid you disagree with this arrogant, angry, rude, tunnel visioned jerk! If he doesn,t know the answer, he,ll change the question.
stillbill33 09/15/2005
I think Stephan A. is right on the money!!! He tells it just like it TIS I dont miss a show, and if I'm held up at a meeting and have to stay late. I have TIVO!!!!!! Keep up the Good Work Stephan. We need more like you.
coloreal 09/01/2005
I really am enjoying Stephen A. Smith and the sports show has. I like the fact that he has people like Allen Iverson on his show. I got to know more about Allen Iverson because he gave him a chance to talk. I have heard a lot of negative things about Iverson but never heard him really get a chance to express himself. I could also tell that Allen Iverson and other guests he has had on his show like Stephen to. I feel that Stephen is handling his sucess very well and he has a lot to be proud of. I am very proud of him and I look forward to him being around for a long time.
JacksSmirkingR evenge 08/28/2005
Wow. This guy has to be the least talented human being to ever get his own show. And that's really saying something (see: Pauly Shore). Someday kids will study this in journalism and broadcasting school - the time when style without any substance made for success. Wow. Un-freakin-believable.
thelmaho 08/26/2005
I love you Stephen A. and I wish you the best. By the way, I enjoyed your shoe with Carmelo Anthony.
vladdy big daddy 08/26/2005
a cocky guy who said that shaq is the greatest basketball player of all time. it's dumb ass comment after dumb ass comment with this guy.
samjung23 08/19/2005
I am so sick of this guy. I used to like him when I first saw him during ESPN's NBA telecasts. Then as time went by, I found out this guy has quite an opinion of pro sports, yet has never played in the pros, or much college, for that matter. I read a Sports Illustrated article about him a few weeks ago, and he comes off as an arrogant blowhard. At least Jim Rome is somewhat interesting to watch, Smith is a turnoff. He's pretty much on the same level as Nancy Grace. I sure wish this trend of annoying TV personalities will end. I think O'Reilly has a lot to do with making it popular. Stephen Smith is gonna burn out faster than most, I guarantee it. I can't even watch that commercial with him, his commentary on the New England Patriots is so dumb it defies logic. Please, get off my TV!

He SUCKS who is he to criticise Brett Favre? he needs to really mind his buisiness and not gass crap up he is jus strait up stupid
MississippiMin d 08/04/2005
Mississippi Minds: I really enjoyed the Allen Iverson Interview, It really gave me a total new outlook on AI. He is quite the man and I thank Steve for opening that door and showing us the Real AI.
phillygirl 08/04/2005
This man lies and makes up sources. He is a disgrace to all journalists and its horrible that he is going to have a show on ESPN.
Yishai 08/04/2005
Stephen A. Smith is a pro-athlete, anti-management tool who fails to see that athletes couldn't make big money if it was not for owners and management. His columns railing against the NFL's agreement are pathetic, especially when you consider that the NBA is nothing more than a Thugs Basketball Association these days, hockey sucks, and baseball's championship goes to whoever buys the best players. Stephen A. Smith wishes to be a cross between Chris Rock and Jim Rome, but has turned out to be not funny and more insulting and useless than Rome. Any jackass who can't see that Brett Favre's business is the Packers should not be glorified on TV where he will kiss the butts of those who visit his show and rip on those smart enough to stay away.
CanadaSucks 07/30/2005
Getting worse. . .once a solid journalist on the fame-treadmill. His acting is becoming more pronounced as his visibility rises. Smith is a good (not great) sportswriter with quality columns. He is knowledgeable about basketball and I respect him - but lose the attitude. Who told this guy that volume equals legitimacy? Steve, shut the hell up and think before you speak. . .you're too talented a writer to play this dumb-act on TV.
sunflower_2782 8 07/30/2005
Frankly speaking, Stephen A. Smith is FAB-U-LOUS!!!!! He is one of the few sports analysts who is NOT afraid to ruffle a few feathers, tread on enormous egos and quite frankly- not be afraid to speak frankly. You can count on Stephen A to take the road less traveled, he will tell it like it is. He will not give athletes, coaches, general managers etc. a free pass. Love him or hate him, you have to admit the man has gumption. I predict his new show will be a success because his fans will tune in to hear his words of wisdom and his detractors will tune in because they wont be able to stay away. Stephen A. Smith- keep on doing what you're doing and pay no attention to those who have nothing better to do than to drink that red-hot Haterade!!!!!!!
thattrainer 07/28/2005
Stephen A. DO YOUR THANG BABY! It is amazing how envious haters have become and will continue to be!!!
Wavebacker 07/26/2005
YO! My name is Stephen A. Smith and I'm gonna get a TV gig by raising my voice and playing the role of angry black man, listen to me, upfront say-what-I-think analyst! I really cant stand this guy. Not only is his delivery harsh, he's an ugly guy to boot. I'm betting he gets women ( if he's not married) because he's on TV, but really , the dude is ugly.********UPDATE********* ESPN is giving Smith his own show - Quike Frankly. I suggest no one watch it so that it dies a quick death and leaves the air ASAP. Smith really bothers me more now that his star is rising on ESPN. Smith is a hack. As a reporter he's OK and does a credible job , but the delivery is awful and definitely meant to make him a polarizing and controversial guy. It may have made this ugly guy popular and given him celebrity status, but it's sad really. Smith tries to force his opinons on us with a loud , tough demeanor, as if to say Hey I said it and it's true so believe me!. A Mr. T bad ass, Black Man approach that is terrible for all. Smith is also one to play the Race Card when it's convenient to him, no doubt in a misguided attempt to gain attention, be controversial and make some sort of statement about Race and Sports in America. I hate that such a clown like this has been able to become part of serious Sports reporting. Smith, Trev Alberts, Shannon Sharpe, Jerry Glanville, Bill Walton all need to go! I have more respect for Terry Bradshaw, Lee Corso and Dick Vitale who are all openly making fun (and having fun) with the Sports they talk about instaed of these other bozos. You can be black and speak intelligently with atittude ( Michael Wilbon on PTI ) or you can be Black and speak with Style ( Stuart Scott ) but Stephen A. does neither.
ttalks2u 07/26/2005
It seems like everytime a black man speaks white america gets upset. Stephan A is a very smart black man speaking his mine of facts. We need more like him. Many of the comments up here sound like Rush Limbaugh making a race issue out of a great reporter. What, blacks can play sports but they are not smart enough to talk about it.
bringiton145 07/25/2005
Do your thang Stephen A. These sorry players in the NBA,NFL and MLB players needs to be harshly critiqued. You go boy and I love your commentary
kevyj67 07/13/2005
Stephen A is my boy!! We need someone who's not all buddy-buddy with the big names (see Ahmad Rashad). He's objective and insightful. I have two words for you Slava Medvedecko!!
Da Moe 06/23/2005
Smith is all mouth without substance. There are FEW Sportcasters who have not played a sport whose opinion I will consider. Along with Smith I wish ESPN would shut up that damn irritating Chris Berman.
baracoot 06/22/2005
He is the best. Tells it like it is, what's wrong with attitude, he's not running for office
trmichigan 06/22/2005
I think Stephen A is great, put aside his angry persona and you see his tremendous insight. He brings balance to the conservatism of Tim L and moderate views of Greg A.
Sherry Rhodes 06/16/2005
Stephen A. Smith is a very intelligent Black-man. He is what makes ESPN worth watching 95% of the time. He really do the homework, on the players that he talks about on-air... SO WHAT, if he have a attitude, HE can do that ..OK. Have anyone seen his bio..... That's five stars by it's self.
frenchy42 06/12/2005
He gets a second star only because he seems to know his stuff ---- but his angry, judgemental and self-righteous attitude toward anything other than himself is a real turn-off. I end up hearing him only if I'm unable to get to the Mute button at the time.
southparker9 04/22/2005
Just Ok. The angriest sport personality on tv. I think he's gonna hit someone someday. Good at getting inside information. Pity he must cover Iverson.
B-Cash 04/03/2005
He is the best sportswriter present...best analyst on ESPN..he can be funny, blunt, intellectual, and informative all at the same time...how can u not like this...he is the guru of basketball...props to Stephen A. Smith..he's cocky and tells it like it is and isnt afraid to tell people they are wrong and that is also really good about him..he is extremely intelligent and an under-rated sportswriter
ellis 04/01/2005
Stephen A.- his only major flaw is arrogance. If he could have a bit more respect for his colleagues, he'd probably be more well-liked.
Corporal34 03/25/2005
STEVEN A. SMITH ISN'T AFRAID TO TELL LIKE IT IS! EVEN IF IT MEANS RAISING STEVEN A. SMITH'S VOICE TO SEVENTY DECIBELS! Seriously, he would be 4 stars if not for that piercing, if not accusing stare he gives the camera.
