There is a lot of light and warmth in this book. I have not met one person who doesn't like this book! This book is very straight forward and appeals to the tougher sort who want to know where they stand and just want some practical advice. James was a very bold writer and almost 'kick ass' in his style! Yet he said some very beautiful things like the Spirit of God yearns for us (ie He wants to have an intimate relationship with us), God is sympathetic and will always help you in trouble and loves a humble heart or those who make themselves miserable by giving up a sin. James also says a very powerful statement 'Mercy triumphs over justice.' I like this book. But you have to be careful when you read this book. Because there are a couple of times when James writes that 'It is not by faith alone, but also by works' and 'faith without works is dead.' It can almost look like he was opposed to Apostle Paul and that James is saying that we are not saved by grace. He is not saying that at all. Because the Word of God does not contradict itself at all and Jesus and Paul both said lots of times that we are saved by grace alone. What James is saying is once you have given your life to Jesus, it will show in your actions. You will become a nicer person and you will start doing good deeds. If you have true faith, good deeds will follow, but that certainly does not mean that we are not saved by grace alone. I believe that when James said it is not by faith alone, but also by works, he was talking about how to live a pleasing life to God, not about salvation. We are saved by grace, so now James is saying to the saved person who is going to heaven that just because you have faith, that doesn't mean you can just sit on your but all day doing nothing and thinking that will be good enough. No, you have to accompany your faith by actions as well. Jehovahs Witnesses have interpreted these verses in James the wrong way and they really believe we have to work our way to heaven. Otherwise overall, it is a good book.
