anyone that says hes average obviously doesnt have ears...john paul jones never got any respect or recognition and i guess some people still dont give him any...its extremely sad

I would rate him up with the best,his bass lines on most all zeps songs are well done.My favorite ramble on is top notch.

Some people are either deaf or can't tell music from noise. John Paul Jones is probably the most underrated bass players of all time. He was not just a member of Led Zeppelin, he was the rock solid foundation on which Zeppelin was based. Although the more flamboyant Page and Plant were undoubtedly t the forefront of the band, Zeppelin would never have been what it was without Jones' bass lines, not to mention his contributions on other instruments. His timing was more accurate than clock, yet he played with incredible blues feeling. I totally agree with MetalCasket, you have just to play "The lemon song" and you will hear what is probably one of the most exquisite outstanding bass lines of all time. Weak and feeble? You've got to be kidding. I have yet to listen to something more solid. Just average? You won't find many bass players that can play like that, especially jamming. Like somebody adequately posted, quantifying musical prowess is a very subjective thing, and probably very futile. Unlike sports, music is not about being the "champion". You may like Jones' playing or not. That's OK with me. But I suggest that those who made those comments go see an ear doctor. They obviously have a physiological hearing malfunction.

Weak and feeble bass player. His performance on Live album, " The Song Remains the Same" is one of the low points in Rock history.

Everyone know he's a great bass player with one of the greatest rock bands of all time - but he practically wrote all the songs on my favorite Zep album "In Through The Out Door". A Supergroup needs good songwriters.

a very well-rounded bass player who can play (or has defined) any style/genre of rock music: blues rock, country, hard, funk, folk, jazz, etc. noted for powerfull blues based bass lines often juxtaposed with fluid melodic sections within the same song. see led zeppelin II as a fundamental study in the evolution of rock bass. The song black dog on IV is entirely made up around Jones' classic bass riff. jones could also play a variety of other instruments as well: keyboards, guitar & mandolin, among others. he arranged music and composed music, and was an oft used session player prior to joining led zeppelin. Remember, Jimmy Page hand-picked Jones to play in his new group-ya really think he's just ok? Page is arguably considered at the top of the list of rock's greatest guitarists. some say Jones is overrated because he was in led zeppelin, others say his contributions to the band are underrated. Is he the best rock bassist of all time? Probably not. it's very subjective to quantify playing ability-there are many great/5 star/whatever bassists I could argue a case for. Does he belong in the discussion of great bassists? EASILY.
