Not a patch on the brilliant performance by Robert Duvall in the same role in the movie, but a fine bit of acting. Linvilles characterization of the hypocritical, McCarthyesque Burns was very good, and the strong counterpoint to the other primary characters.

You people attacking Linville are just attacking Frank Burns. Funny thing is in real life from what I have read from the other cast Larry would have been the guy you would have most wanted to be around in real life. Linville played this character so well you had to sometimes hate Frank Burns and others feel sorry for him. RIP Larry

The show lost it's edge when this character left the show.

I'm sorry, but Frank sucked. He was paranoid, he was hyperreligious, he was blindly patriotic, he had a holier-than-thou take on morality, he was a damned hypocrite, he was prejudiced, big-mouthed and overopinionated. Burns was, by far, the single most obnoxious, annoying characters on the show. Even Winchester was less obnoxious than Frank. Winchester was a snob but he had redeeming qualities. And in a way, his snobbishness was somewhat endearing. Burns' hypocrisy and stupidity was not. It got to a point near the end of Burns' career at the 4077th that whenever I'd see him in a scene, I'd say 'Oh boy.... what stupid thing is Burns going to say NOW?' It was a relief when Burns left the show -- not because I hated Larry Linville (who was an excellent actor. He characterized 1950s blind patriotism and paranoia extremely well) but because I could no longer bear to be around Frank for even a few seconds. He had gotten that obnoxious. Frank served his purpose for a while but at the end, he had become too obnoxious to take. Winchester was a breath of fresh air after Burns' Ann Coulter-esque conservatism.

Larry Linville did a great job portraying Frank Burns. The series was never quite the same after he, Trapper, and Henry left.

Burns was somewhat the antithesis of Col Potter (i.e., Potter was a capable officer and doctor, Burns was neither, although he fancied himself to be both). I've met (and served with) this type of officer from time to time - usually, they are regarded with as much respect in real life as Burns was on MASH.
