Great Character actor loved the episode where he got his hat (by Radar calling his mom). Wish the shows VIP's would have not let the character be such an ass especially in the last show that was a mistake even if he did sort of aplogize to Hotlips

A well-played snob well before "Frazier",this character was the polar opposite of Hawkeye and Pierce. If you hated him,the actor was doing his job!

When I was a boy, while MASH was still new, I thought Major Winchester hilarious. Now, as I approach forty--somewhat older than Charles probably was at the time (he once said Harvard, Class of '43, which would have made him about 32)--he strikes me as not only snobbish, but remarkably immature. Someone with so much education and erudition, surely, ought to be astute enough to assess the situation he was in and adapt to it better. Not only that, but Charles behaved in an outright childish manner at times: e.g., suggesting that one of the schoolchildren from Hawkeye's town cut up one of his father's suits. Still, his expressions and banter were very amusing.

he was such a snob who thought he could buy his way out of the war but when he realized he couldnt he adapted and became a likable but still snobby character

He sure made life interesting at the MASH 4077th. He was a good guy. But too pigheaded for his own good.

I have too many favorite characters in this series, and Winchester is one of them. Although generally an opinionated, obnoxious character, he did have his endearing moments. Occasionally he managed to beat Pierce and Hunnicutt at their own game, and on rare occasion he actually made common cause with them. I admired his command of the English language, as snobby as it may have been.
