ItemImageOriginally, there was a band called Alice Cooper led by a singer named Vincent Damon Furnier. Under his direction, Alice Cooper pioneered a grandly theatrical and violent brand of heavy metal that was designed to shock. Drawing equally from horror movies, vaudeville, heavy metal, and garage rock, the group created a stage show that featured electric chairs, guillotines, fake blood, and huge boa constrictors, all coordinated by the heavily made-up Furnier. By that time, Furnier had adopted the name for his androgynous on-stage personality. ... Read More... at allmusic.com

Just about everything in hard rock and metal was influenced by Alice. A great live perfomer, with a ton of great albums. You have to put this guy in.

Cooper has an impressive body of work throughout his career. I know people especially love his work with the original band and his early solo years, but he still is putting out some good stuff in 2008. His theatrical shows are legendary and his influence is strong in hard rock, metal, punk, and other others. Whether you are a personal fan or not, you can't deny what this guy has done. He has had a terrific career going into his fifth decade in music and still puts on a high energy show. I respect that and him.

I actually like his newer stuff more than the 70's stuff. My husband got me into hard rock and metal music a few years ago, and recently I have gotten into some Alice. I can see his influence all over music especially hard rock, he definitely belongs. In my view they ought to put him in with Nugent, my favorite band AC/DC and one or two other hard rockers.

Definitely got add Alice. He brought theatrics to the mainstream, has some great songs, and there is something to like about every single Alice album. Not to mention he is a real ambassador for hard rock. Definitely got to be there.

When you consider if a band or performer should be in the Hall of Fame, it largely should be based on what they bring to music. Alice Cooper is a pioneer in every way. His original band produced some of the greatest hard rock albums of all time. His solo career has provided a mix of a variety of styles and some of those albums are downright compelling like WTMN and The Last Temptation. He brought theatrics into music, was the first to wear makeup on stage, and today he is still a great live act and still puts out quality albums. All of the 80's bands owe him a debt of gratitude. Even new bands like My Chemical Romance cite him as an influence.

Pros: Some pre-punk era classics, influential image. Cons: Relies a lot on production and razzamatazz over substance and when Alice Cooper went solo and ditched the band, it was over artistically.

A pretty decent and weird band back in the 70's, with a slight string of hits highlighted by 'School's Out'. Are they worthy of the Hall of Fame? I don't really think so. Can they be compared to the Beatles, or the Rolling Stones? I don't think so.

Brilliant music combined with a awsome stage show.He invented shock rock and have influenced a huge amount of artist and metal bands.A true original and a living legend. He definately belong in the rock and roll hall of fame.If he doesn`t deserve it who does???If Kiss get inducted before Alice it will be the biggest shame of all time...

Invented theatrical rock even before Bowie. Like Marc Bolan and T. Rex, it is a crime that Alice is never even nominated. Also like Bolan, a true innovator and rocker. Get him in now. Alas, he has few friends among RS and that clique so it will be tough. They like sensitive singer/songwriters a little too much. A true innovator, also like Marc Bolan. What the hall of fame should be about, IMO.

Cooper was the king of shock rock. Anyone who has as much influence over a genre of music deserves the hall of fame. He is still doing it today and now it includes two generations...his daughter calico (so he needs help in naming children) is a back up singer for him now.

Pros: The BAND named Alice Cooper undoubtedly deserves enshrinement. A huge influence to virtually every hard rock band that succeeded them. Cons: The lead singer, some douchebag named Vincent Furnier, assumed the band name and proceeded to become a celebrity without portfolio. Kind of like a post-modern Charles Nelson Reilly. About 3 good songs after 1974, and none after 1980; Stole Iggy Pop's act, dumbed it down and cleaned it up Verdict: The band-YES, but only AFTER the Stooges are inducted; the douchebag with the snake, by himself--NO

Great musician, one of the originals. Marilyn Manson can't hold a candle to his obvious idol, who by the way is a very articulate, well-mannered, and intellegent guy off-stage. I should know. Alice is truly a Hall Of Fame musician and performer. I've seen him 4 times, the first in 1979 where I took a picture that hung proudly in my living room until I got married in 1996, anything for love, I guess. If he's not deserving of a HOF spot, nobody is.

Alice Cooper is long overdue the respect that he has earned over a career that dwarfs many of those already inducted. He has made several OUTSTANDING and groundbreaking albums. Love It To Death; Killer; Schools Out; and Billion Dollar Babies are brimming with classics that have been anthems, parodies, and standards. Many discredit Cooper because of his powerful stage presence, which they claim, takes away from the musical merit. It's a shame that they don't realize that he not only made great music.... he was/is also the pre-iminent showman. He single handedly STARTED the whole "Glam" genre that prevailed within the rock industry for years. Many overlook Cooper in favor of Bowie, or worse yet...Kiss! Please... check your history, get the facts, AC was the original. AC must also be given credit for his longevity. His stage presence is amazing, he gives 100%, and that is SO much more than I can say for so many of the stiffs that have already been inducted. The election comittee simply MUST get their head out of their ___, and give us fans what we demand! If anyone has ever represented rebellion and chaos (last time I looked, that's what Rock & Roll is supposed to be all about)better than ALICE COOPER, tell me who it is???

I'm afraid many acts owe Alice their inspiration, and the permission to act out and create "shows." If there's any aspect of theatricality to a rock show today, he's responsible for starting it. No great talent here except for the context, so I'd think he has to go in as great influence or something. I just saw him a couple months ago (2005) and was amazed, pleased. No more amazed than a broadway show might amaze me, but with the hard rock, the great little band he'd put together, and his sense of humor, his sincere and energetic attempt to PLEASE the audience rather than to be worshipped and idolized -- I just think he's great. Unlike most rock stars, Alice Cooper knows he's not really important in the great scheme of things. For that reason alone I'd vote him in!

He should be the one with the keys to the door to let the others in. I saw him at Market Square Arena in 1979. He ruined me for everyone else. I keep waiting for a show and no one else would give me one. The closest thing that came to it was bowie's Glass spider tour. All the Freak wannabes owe him and he should be called the 'Grandaddy of shock and Make-up"

The Coop is still one of the greatest original song writers out there! He is still great on stage! He keeps up and never misses a beat. Hi vocals are bad-ass and he is one the origianls! His new album Dirty Diamonds redifines him once again. The lyrics alone are praise worthy, not to mention strong hearty vocals. He's recently gone back to being as great as he was when he started out. He's a guy from back in the day still attracting such a varried crowd. From teens like myself to all his fans from the 70's. That's fricken awsome! If I ever meet him, I'm going to drop to my knees and chant "I'm not worthy!". Alice you're awsome! 18-m-NM

Alice Cooper is a legend in classic rock. A great songwritter, an aswome showman and a great voice. The first real shock rocker. But he aslo adds humor and fun to his work. He has played with many different musicans and changed with the times, which makes it difficult to really put a finger on him. From '71-'76 was his really strong period. With classic albums such as Billion Dollar Babies, Welcome To My Nightmare and an excellent greatest hits album there really is no reason he shouldn't be in the Rock'n Roll Hall of fame. His songs are still played on the radio today. Such classic as No More Mr. Nice Guy, I'm 18, Schools Out and Welcome To My Nightmare. Some of his later work is aslo very strong. 1994's The Last Temptation is an excellent example of that. I first got into Cooper when he released his comeback album Constrictor. That album really opened up to a new generation of fans.

I don't know about solo Alice, but the band Alice Cooper should have gotten in years ago! Hell, they were one of the first heavy metal bands, new wave bands, punk bands, shock rock bands, goth bands. Any band that plays that kind of music should take a bow to the late Alice Cooper Group!

I loved him as a teenager, probably as much because he shocked and upset (and repulsed) all the adults around me as for his music. After Muscle of Love (which contained some truly classic songs), he divested himself of the gifted band that had been responsible for much, if not most, of what had been so intense and powerful about his music, and began setting himself up as a schlocky Las Vegas-type circus act and 2-bit character actor. The music deteriorated markedly and rapidly after that, needless to say (but I'll say it anyway). Sad, I guess, but he and his original band (Michael Bruce, Glen Buxton, Neil Smith, Dennis Dunaway) have left behind a substantial body of very creditable work that sounds even more seething and caustic today than it did when it was first released, especially when you put it up against the truly-pusilanimous crap out there now that's supposed to pass for rock music. True, a lot of what Alice and the boys put out is derivative (they obviously appropriated a lot from Iggy Pop and the Stooges), but songs like School's Out, I Love The Dead, I'm 18, Dead Babies, Second Coming, The Ballad of Dwight Fry, Teenage Lament 74...well, these are great rock songs by any standard. I miss these guys.
