It's really two bands, with the gabriel era being hugely influential on the prog rock scene and the phil era defining the mainstream sound of music during the 80s. Shoud be in but the HOF's bias against prog rock rears it's ugly head again!

Should they be in by now? Absolutely. If you want talented musicians in, they fit the category (Tony Banks, Mike Rutheford and yes, even Phil Collins, throughout most of their career and Peter Gabriel and Steve Hackett in their early years). If you want hits, they fit the category (That's All, No Reply At All, Misunderstanding, Throwing It All Away, I Can't Dance). If you want a band that's stayed together for a long time, albiet with personnel changes (the Rolling Stones had personnel changes and so did Parliament Funkadellic and the Grateful Dead, so don't tell me that should keep them out!), they fit the category. If you want classic albums (The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway, Duke, Selling England By The Pound, A Trick Of The Tail and even Abacab and Invisible Touch), they fit the category."Twelve o'clock and it's time for lunch, dum de dum de dum...."

That would be a Revelation.

Yes and Genesis were phenominal musicians with complex musical themes. They had success in wonderful music, and had success in pop charts. They sold out stadiums all over the world. Ignoring progressive rock, but putting in pop and country music offend true rockers.
JandC 03/08/2008
I think that Genesis is one of the first British Progressive Bands that used costumes and masks.

Just found out that Madonna is getting in....MADONNA !!!! Enough said...
FranksWildYear s 02/19/2008
For a brief period they were a second tier prog-rock band with a decent lead singer song-writer. But Peter Gabriel's best work came after he left the band and with Phil Collins at the helm they were a really boring generic pop band.
detroitdiezel 01/30/2008
Phenominal band. They are more deserved than most and should have in their first year of eligibility.

Absolutely!

Supper's ready...shouldn't the hall of fame be ready as well? On the strength of the early stuff, like a number of border-induction bands (Chicago, Moodys) they stumbled some in later years but I say let the lads in (after DEEP PURPLE, of course)
edt4 10/03/2007
I'm not the biggest fan, but they were definitely a talented, innovative and influential band. If not them, who?

PUT THEM IN THE HALL!!!

This is how I spent the late 70s/early 80s, listening to Genesis. Thanks to Peter Gabriel for leading me down so many amazing musical byways!

Pros: Innovative prog work that managed to make a dent in the mainstream, resulting in plenty of imitators and thousands influenced. Cons: A lot of their sounds are rather dated, no real wall-to-wall killer albums (plenty of filler)
sfalconer 04/26/2007
Boring over produced elevator music with little substance to it.

garydavis9361 02/24/2007
I like them but their is material too repetitive and the overreliance on synthesizers blunts its impact. It has '70s and 80s written all over it.
ajowoods 02/21/2007
Suffers from both the prog-rock and pop-rock bias, as well as Gabriel's and Collins' solo careers. But, the group has too much influence and hits to ignore.
bobga 01/30/2007
With Gabriel, Without Gabriel. That's the beauty of this group. It was two (perhaps three) entirely different things. It was Gabriel/Banks pallet to create art rock (amazing art rock at that). It was the band that help to mainstream prog rock. Duke is definetely not the same Art Rock standard as LLDOB. But there is great musicianship and the story is accessible. Later, the band turns truly commercial, but as another poster wrote - they were the biggest band in the world for a time. For those of us who love prog rock, that almost hurts, because our love of the music is what sets us apart. But it's an amazing transformation. And it's the reason this band should be in the Hall.
power54 01/19/2007
Next to GFR, they're my favorite all-time band!! Hard to believe that with the talent this band has produced-- Peter Gabriel, Phil Collins, Mike Rutherford, and Tony Banks--that they aren't in already!!
watergrass 01/16/2007
Great band, but kinda dissapointed. What have they done for the fans during the past 13yrs or so? Phil was a cheap shot, the band was very successful and he left. When he left he never look back. I say Phil should get back with them and do a Fans appreciation tour. If they dont do it,....it's a good thing that they will never be inducted. Wake up smell the coffee Phil.

Utter Brilliant audio art
MWysol 01/09/2007
Although I am biased since Genesis is my all time favorite band, their ground-breaking Art Rock performances in the 70s and top notch musicianship throughout should have gotten them inducted 10 years ago. It is a travesty.
lazylawriter 10/27/2006
It's time. They are long overdue. Show them some respect!
PierreSilverbi rches 07/18/2006
Genesis needs to get in first - then Peter Gabriel (solo).
july07 07/07/2006
I would place Genesis above Moody Blues and even Yes.
marto 03/20/2006
You got to lewt Genesis in otherwise they wont let phil & Peter in
abacab 01/16/2006
I may be the last person on Earth who still likes the Collins-era Genesis. Gabriel's Genesis doesn't do it for me personally, but obviously they have many hardcore followers to this day. As for '80s Genesis, people seem to have forgotten that they were one of the most popular bands in the world for a few years. They are kept out only by the RRHoF's bias against bands that used a synthesizer as a lead instrument.

Five Stars for the Peter Gabriel/Steve Hackett Era. Challenging music that aimed beyond the narrow boundaries left for Rock and Pop music. Did they sometimes miss they mark? YES but you can't aim too high. Better to fail daring to do something difficult, than aim incredibly low and make your mark. Zero stars for their later Phil Collins pop recordings - a stain on their reputation.

Open the door and let em in, mama.
bsd987 12/08/2005
I'm not commenting on their earlier work because all good that Genesis ever could have done is not outweighed by Invisible Touch, the worst song ever. They are not deserving for that one song, amongst other horrible songs as well....
Kelticman 12/01/2005
From Genesis To Revelation (their first album) up to their best and possibly the finest rock album ever produced in my opinion, The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway, Genesis were untouchable in their particular field of progressive rock. Their early stage shows, featuring Gabriel's eccentric, costumed theatrics, earmarked them as one of the best live bands of that era - earning rave reviews from audiences and critics alike. When Gabriel left to pursue a solo career in 1975, drummer Phil Collins took over as lead singer. The four piece line-up released best selling album A Trick Of The Tail, followed later that year by Wind and Wuthering. Guitarist Steve Hackett departed... And Then There Were Three! (the title of their next album). Subsequent albums of a more pop orientated nature were released before Phil Collins decided to leave the band too. Original members, Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford decided to continue, recruting Scottish singer, Ray Wilson to take over as frontman. Their final album Calling All Stations was released to mixed reviews (I think it's awful) and following a less than successful tour of America and lack of airplay for the album, Genesis finally decide to call it a day. For me, The Peter Gabriel era contains the quintessential essence of what Genesis and their music was all about.
Diamond Dave 11/27/2005
Right after Deep Purple. You can knit-pick about later mis-steps under Phil Collin's control, but whether the Peter G. or Phil version, they put out enough classy or popular music to be included in any group that allows a blues man such as Buddy Guy in.
tkoyo 10/30/2005
is there a way to exclude collins? can we have an asterik?
Gianthogweed 10/19/2005
Between 1970-80 they were one of the best rock songwriter groups in the world. Definitely deserve to be in.
cjmyers41 10/06/2005
The stuff with Peter Gabriel would be worthy.
YellowEagle 08/16/2005
Peter Gabriel Genesis was amazing. After he left they had 2 or 3 good albums, everything else is crap
jetrush2112 07/14/2005
The original line up, with Gabriel & Hackett, was so far advanced in music that it's a shame and a sin they are yet to be inducted!
kingguiness 07/14/2005
The band Travis has a song with the lyrics what's a wonderwall anyway? Im changing the lyrics to What's An Abacab anyway? Peter Gabriel Genesis was great! Even for a person like me who thumbs his nose at prog rock. Phil Collins Genesis is pure junk! I will accept Genesis in the Hall Of The Fame under the condition that Phil Collins is not part of the ceremony!
frogger20190 07/13/2005
An art rock band that made it. Their post 1990 output is disposable, but everything up to that (including Invisible Touch--bad song, good album) still sounds great. Lamb Lies Down is the best Gabriel record; Abacab is the best Gabriel-less record.
JukeBoxHero 06/16/2005
im going to have to agree wth CanadaSucks.
