Clearly when people talk about the valliant efforts of men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice to defend democracy they weren't referring to the onerous task of getting your fat ass off the couch once every four years to be a part of society. If that's too much to ask of the average citizen then why are we bothering. And spare me the arguement about shut-ins, the elderly and disabled. When we weren't as sophisticated as we are today, people used to call a family member, nieghbour or friend to come and take them to the polls. The more we enable people to live closed behind secure walls, the less safe our world gets.

This is election fraud on a scale never dreamed of by Richard Daley or Tammany Hall just waiting to happen.

Absolutely. It is so hard for the modern cretin voter to jump into his car and drive to the fire station. We really need to inject 100 million cases of potential fraud into the process! I would love to see 100 million Florida election cases or a percentage thereof, at least.

Not just no, but hell no! "Secure online" is almost an oxymoron. This is just asking for a disaster.

I don't believe anything is secure online.

This suggestion (i.e. on-line voting) makes a huge presumption, namely that it can be secure. Even assuming that the government invests in state-of-the-art technology on the front-end, the government doesn't have the greatest track record of maintaining that level save for defense systems. There simply are too many demands for public resources. I suppose that each voting district can be a closed network (which could reduce the threat), but this technology is not my area of expertise. Several of the prior reviewers noted a "digital divide", but that isn't really a concern for me assuming that traditional voting options are continued until no longer economically feasible (though I speculate that voting method may become a class status issue). Anyway, as I've stated elsewhere, voting is a serious matter and the process should remain a somewhat solemn matter. On-line voting may degrade that aura.

I certainly don't see this as being a great idea. I don't think the internet is ever FULLY "secure".

yes, though voter fraud might be a hurdle that cant be easily corrected by on line voting.

This sounds great in theory, but in practice it would be a computer security nightmare, and vote tampering would be all too easy.

My brother-in-law is employed by the military to make US government networks as secure as possible. As he will tell you, hackers are always finding a new way to find a vulnerability in a system and exploit it. Microsoft, king of the daily security patches, knows this all too well. Systems that aren't networked can be manipulated as well, so perhaps the best solution involves both a paper trail and a computerized tally for cross-checking results.

Secure on-line voting? The potential for fraud is great here, given that it's very easy for hackers to get into voter databases and manipulate the count. Who knows, we might end up with Lyndon LaRouche as President!

I'm very, very suspicious about the possibilities of fraud with this, not to mention the other usual high-tech problems that everyone who uses a computer knows all too well. I have a career in high-tech, and let me tell you--the more I learn, the more uneasy I become: there are simply too many ways for this to go wrong, and it is way too hard to go back and verify or recount. Let's not do this.

Hacking the Pentagon and the CIA was probably a little tricky. Hacking elections will be a piece of cake, and a reputation-maker for the first hacker who does it.

This is a terrible idea, at least for the time being. With hackers, online credit card fraud, and network crashings this could be disasterous. I do agree that going to the ballots to vote should be easier, quicker, more efficient, etc., but online voting is just a bad idea.

The voting hours and places in this country is a shame. We should allow online voting to make casting ones ballot easier at work, home etc... Another suggestion, have the ballots open on the weekends so more people can make it to the polls.

I don't necessarilty think that this is a good idea. I am definately concerned about security issues, as with the knowledge today, voter fraud would be very easy to commit. I think we should probably stick with voter booths.

Maybe one day in the distant future, but we still have to work out the kinks with paper ballots before we move on to more complicated systems. Voter fraud would be another issue. With nobody supervising where an online voter is or what he/she is doing, I could easily get a group of people together and coerce them into voting for something they new nothing about.

In addition to what Solinoid_DH says it also makes it easier for the goverment to gerrimander the system.

I feel like on-line voting would be riskier and more susceptible to fraud than using voting booths.

On-line voting is a very good way for many persons to vote. This way must also be "certified" in a manner to be sure that it is secure, clearly understood, and efficient. For the many persons that use the internet, there would be no waiting in lines and being turned away after waiting for hours. On-line can pose other problems, such as un-secure lines, and computer bugs/glitches, and a mis-interpreting of process. A "Certification" of this and all voting processes would be required to make sure that the voter intent is correct and all votes are counted properly. The business world deals with a standard "certification" of many process that can be transformed into a Voting Process Certification. I have begun to develop such a certification and would like to submit this to the DNC, RNC, and Fed. Elect. Committee. I have written to them, but have not gotten any response. Does any one have any suggestions? Please let me know. Thanks, Ann Corbett, ann.corbett@at.siemens.com

While the aim of voting online should be pursued, currently there is no way to absolutely guarantee authenticity of the identity of the voter, that you are who you say you are. At the current level of security available in this sort of an application, hackers and other programming experts would interfere, that is a given. Only fingerprint, DNA, or some other equally absolute means of identification would give some element of safe identification of the voter, and even then what is to say the information could not be intercepted and corrupted along the way? I would love to see online voting become possible but I don't trust the integrity of the process at this point.

I strongly disagree. I believe it will allow too much room for fraud. God knows we have plenty of those.

This is a very good idea. The ease of on-line voting would ensure maximum participation in all elections. Obviously, this would be in conjunction with the traditional voting booth. However, the use of computers would allow everyone to cast their vote in a timely process no matter where they are. Of course, the security issues worry me..the process would need to be researched extensively in order to ensure validity of results.

On-line voting has the potential to dramatically improve political participation in our country, and it should and will happen. But there are two big issues that must be resolved. First, we need to ensure the security and integrity of the process - as of right now, the possibilities for fraud are too extensive. And second, we must deal with the "digital divide" by finding a way to make it extremely easy for people who don't own computers and/or don't have computer skills to take advantage of Internet voting. If and when we solve those two problems, on-line voting will become a spectacularly useful tool for our democracy.

In theory a good idea, but not in reality. America is about equal access and this is certainly not equal access. Until the digital divide is eliminated, on-line voting is not a reasonable solution.

Please. I am very comfortable on the Internet. This would make my life, along with a lot of other peoples lives, just one bit easier. It gives one less excuse for not voting. This would also increase the number of young Americans voting. I don't see one bad thing about it. If you are one of the people who are scared with your vote being tampered with, then you can walk down to the polls, personally, I am a 100% comfortable.

Finally someone is listening!! This has got to be the way things go. Just think how many more people would vote if they could do it online rather than have to stand in line for two hours during lunch, after work or to vote absentee on their weekend. C'mon this is surely a fantastic idea and let's face it it's only a matter of time.

I like it a lot - in principle. However, until the digital divide is closed a bit more, on-line voting will disproportionately benefit the haves over the have-nots. Maybe in another decade...

A no brainer. Anyone or any party that tries to prevent the introduction of on-line voting is not a lover of democracy. No one can argue that on-line voting would increase election participation levels - how can you not support this? Voting should be the easiest thing in the world to do...

While this would allow people to easily compare candidates by reviewing news and position papers, the possibility of hackers creating more voter fraud than we ALREADY live with is just no acceptable.
