I don't think it has much to do with patriotism, but it isn't a bad idea, provided (and this is the big caveat) that one does so with a modicum of critical thinking.

I don't care whether you're watching Fox or CNN, or reading the Economist or the Village Voice, the Neo-Nazi Quarterly or the Journal of Marxist-Leninist Thought, but you should not make any of them an alternative for thinking for yourself.

Unfortunately, too many people are too lazy or too poorly equipped to think for themselves.

Doesn't make you any more or less patriotic. But it doesn't hurt to get another perspective.

This has nothing to do with patriotism, but be careful who might be reading over your shoulder.

i think it's important to read news outside of mainstream papers, but reading alternative news, rags like the Village Voice, for example, can be as bad as submitting to another form of Nazism. Alt Presses have agendas, almost as strict and hardlined as a political party. they are extremely biased. for instance, you'll never read about one good thing Bush does in the Voice. Alt News sources can be entertaing, at most. but i never feel i'm getting the truth from them.

Read, watch, listen; the media has become such a collection of circuses over the years it's a little hard to sort out the truth at times. It doesn't help that all the clowns are starting to look a little bit alike either. I guess you have to try though. Even if you're far end liberal or conservative it makes sense to know your enemy so to speak.

It depends what news your alternating to. Also, it mainly contributes to keeping an open mind more so than patriotism.

They piss me off, but I read them anyway. You have to know what people think.

Like the mainstream news, alternative news has its biases, but it also tells you things that the mainstream news would be afraid to report. Just take everything you read with a grain of salt.
