. . .being a little nicer near the end of his life does not earn Sharon a free pass from me. . .Sharon gets a free ride from the American media- he is not blameless for the troubles that has plagued the region during his tenure. . .

A bloodthirsty tyrant. Saddam's alleged crimes against humanity pale in comparison to those of Sharon.

The tragedy of the Israeli-Palestinian crisis is that while they're small minorities on both sides, the extremists keep the moderates from reaching a compromise. Don't think the Israelis need a compromise? Consider this: Arabs comprise over half the population of Israel and are growing at a much faster rate. Yet, the Jews have grabbed the majority of resources and realestate. If a compromise is not reached, Israel will get burned by the resulting trainwreck - one way or another - and the outcome will be worse than any compromise currently on the table. While he has gotten positive results for the Israelis, Sharon's actions have been short-sighted. For example, his recent dispute with Bush over new settlements even lends support to the cynical theory that the withdrawal from Gaza is motivated by a disire to strengthen his hold on the West Bank (which risks non-compliance with the Road Map and could derail the peace process). Right now, Sharon should be helping Mahmoud Abbas show the Palestinians that peace is a more viable and productive option than the Intifada. Yet, he appears to be more interested in finding excuses to maintain the status quo.

This is a man with so much power to do good, he is in charge of the people that should of lead the world to peace and unity instead he controls them through fear and is the cause of strife in the world.

Hard liner, says it like it is, a no nonsense man, surprised he hasn't already got a bullet like some of his predecessors..........

A man determined to protect God's Chosen People and Land. Condemned countless times by the UN for peace-keeping, like constructing a fence to keep terrorists out while the EU builds a fence nearly five times longer to seperate free movement - Israel and Sharon stand strong in the face of world hate and condemnation. Pray for the Peace of Israel.

Sharon was elected by the Israeli people on a platform that promised to wage war in protection of the Israeli people after Ehud Barak (under pressure from Bill Clinton) attempted to give away the store and Arafat said, not enough. It is not his mandate or his responsibility to further the peace process as long as the Palestinians refuse to acknowledge the right of Israel to exist and suicide/homicide bombers infiltrate among the Israeli people and blow up malls, pizza parlors and school busses. Peace will happen under one of two possible sets of circumstances: 1) after much fierce fighting by armed, trained Israeil/Palestinian combatants (organized armies) the Palestinians (or, possibly, the Israelis) become discouraged with the loss of life and decide to capitulate and sign a peace treaty (which will be the last worldly act of the Palestinian leader), or 2) the wall is finished and the Palestinians are so economically starved that they pressure their leaders to stop the hostilities. I don' see a third set of circumstances but #2 seems to be the least costly in terms of innocent lives lost. Stop whining that you want peace in the Middle East.

The man has set back the peace process like no other leader before him. Sadat and Rabin's deaths have gone in vain because of his actions and choices. He simply cannot shed his terrorist background to become a peace seeking politician.
billiefan2000 05/06/2004
A good leader for GOD'S chosen People in Israel but Ariel Sharon needs to be more tough on Yassar Arafat and other terrorist groups such as Hamas and Islamic Jihad who are bent on wiping Israel and Jews and Christians off the face of the earth.

If Ariel Sharon is indicative of what we have in store for leadership in the 21st Century, then we can just assume that this century isn't going to be any less bloody than the last one. This guy really has no interest in making peace with the Palestinians. Israeli nationalists are going to have to find a way to co-exist with their Arab neighbors. The ideal solution for them would be to deport all the Arabs to another country, but isn't going to happen nor should it happen. Sharon's tit-for-tat policy concerning terrorism along with his repression of the Palestinian people and their economy is what's causing the problems in the first place. Why is it that a lot of young Palestinians, most of them my age, are willing to give up their lives in suicide bombings? They've got nothing to live for; unemployment in the occupied territories is up 70% in some areas, as opposed to 10% in Israel proper. The standard of living is horrid in Palestinian areas, and to make matters worse, the wall Sharon is building is destroying Palestinian trade networks. Sharon is well past his prime, time to bring in some visionary leadership that will help put the country back on track; this guy is an old warrior, time to retire him.

Not as great as Begin, but cose enough for government work.
StanUzbeck 07/26/2003
Just as Bush gives all Americans a bad name, Ariel Sharon makes Israelis look like vicious, racist, homicidal thugs. The man has as much hatred for the Palestinians as Hitler had towards the Jews. After Bush, Sharon is probably the second most despicable person on Earth.
tahnee18 04/23/2003
Terrorist, murderer, and rapist. A member of the axis of evil in coalition with saddam, bin lauden, and bush to bring destruction to mankind
koneand 04/09/2003
i say terrible in relation to peace. it is clear that the only peace he want's is Israely dominance of the Arab Palestinians. As i see it unless the Arab Palestinians get outright self determination- i.e there will not be peace! Sharon started this whole mess by insighting the Arabs- after going to their temple and telling them he will turn it into a museum! But I guess in their hearts depths Israelis do not really want peace since they elected Sharon twicw and continue to support his policies!
BIGBABY 02/02/2003
The true defender of democracy. He is not a terrorist, he's eliminating the terrorists- the PLO, and the people of the PLO. Thats right. The Palestinian people support suicide bombers. Thier terrorists. Israel is not just going to sit back and watch dozens of suicide bombings happen.
zuchinibut 12/10/2002
In no way do I condone the actions of some of the violent Palestinians, but Sharon has not helped lead his country towards peace.
AryanDan 08/31/2002
I am a supporter of a Hebrew homeland and a Palestinian one, not to forget an Aryan homeland. But, I am not a supporter of the tactics of Israel or the Palestinians. I feel that the US giving unquestioning alliance to one side, ie Israel, we are complicit in their human rights crimes. Sharon, besides being another fat and ugly politician, is a cold blooded murderer of children. Ariel Sharon said that the recent bombing of an apartment building killing 14 non-combatants, including children, was a success. Now, the Israeli military is bombing the houses of the suicide bombers to send a violent message. I guess Israel's next plan is the "final solution".
josefinas 08/16/2002
Bush should put him on his "people to hunt down and kill"-list with Usama bin Laden and those on deathrow in the U.S. He's just as much a terrorist as the next guy.
magellan 08/15/2002
Down to two stars for dropping a one ton bomb on a residential neighborhood in Gaza. Perhaps even more chilling than Sharon's decision to knowingly blow up Palestinian civilians while assasinating a Hamas leader, was his timing. Just prior to this assasination, progress was being made. Hamas was hinting at a seize fire. Diplomatic progress was being made. Some level of agreement was being reached by the surrounding Arab states about the prospect of peace. Then, Sharon dropped his bomb, making me wonder if he wants peace after all. Maybe the rest of the world should just quarantine Israel and Palestine in their own little hell, refusing to allow anyone to leave until they prove they can live like human beings and not murderous beasts.

king of terorrists!
TheFreak 06/05/2002
Another fool. I don't know what he hypnotized the people of Israel with to make them elcet him into office, but he's possibly more stupid than Benjamin Netanyahu (who did absolutely nothing laudable, by the way). I don't care whose religion or what cause he thinks he's protecting, but sticking his nose up in the air and reacting to terrorism with more terrorism is beneficial...how, may I ask? How long before it's possible to ditch this loser? Take care, everyone!
oodie 04/05/2002
as much of a terrorist as arafat, bin laden, and Bush.
aft1970 11/08/2001
I think rating him as 1 in 5 is not good. It would be better to rate him as -5!The person who murdered many childs and women in sabra and shtila and ruined the peace process!
ellajedlicka21 10/19/2001
We can only hope that somehow all the chaos and calamity going on the Middle East can be brought to a cessation and that peace will be finally attained. Hopefully Sharon can bring help to bring a small step toward achieving that goal.
