Mullah Omar was the leader of the Taliban regime in Afghanistan from 1996-2001. In a country with highly factional politics, this small group of Pashtun warriors and religious students managed to gain the upper hand using heavy handed techniques. By September 1996, the Taliban took over the capital of Kabul, dismissing the government, which was run by those who later became known as the Northern Alliance, the internationally recognized government. The Taliban imposed a puritanical form of Islamic law in the areas of the country that they controlled. Among other things, the government began to crack down on the opium trade, which was major economic commodity in the country. Today, it flourishes once again with an ambivalent and weak central government not cracking down on it. Maybe this was the only good thing they did, the drug culture in that country is holding them back. Women were severely oppressed during the Taliban regime, they were not even permitted to go to school or work. It was a paternalistic and theocratic societies. Here's a tip, holy warriors of any religion aren't really fit to run a government. A modern and progressive society is one which separates religion and state. That does not mean that religious people shouldn't have their rights denied, this means that there needs to be balance. Warfare continued through the Taliban regime; causing refugees to flee into Pakistan and Iran. To make matters worse, there was a major drought in Afghanistan during the late-1990's. The UN imposed sanctions on weapons sales to the Taliban for their harboring of international terrorist Osama bin Laden. Nonetheless, the US showed interest in building an oil pipeline through the country connecting the Caspian oil reserves to the Indian Ocean. Reality is that cheap energy drives our economy and this is a quick way to go around OPEC. It didn't work out however for various reasons. By 2001, the Taliban was on the rocks. They were becoming excessively brutal; the militia destroyed all the statues in the nation, most notably an international heritage landmark outside of Kabul, the Bamian Buddhas, two incredible scluptures carved out of a sheer cliff. I wonder if they forgot to burn some heretics at the stake. How medieval could these people be. After 9/11, the Taliban refused to hand back bin Laden, giving the US a reason to attack Afghanistan and the al-Qaeda sanctuaries there. The US supported the Northern Alliance, the ragtag remnants of the former government to help oust Omar and the Taliban. US troops entered there to root out al-Qaeda and search for Osama bin-Laden and Mullah Omar. The country remains a mess today, it's future uncertain and a government still controlled by and large by warlords. US intervention in this case was justified because of bin Laden, but I'm skeptical that we can get a complete hold on the internal political situation there. It's up to them to work out the details. We can't impose our ways on a tribal society. But it's a sad state of affairs there.

To say nothing of the terrorist attacks or his involvement with bin Laden, my understanding is we have been sending 170 million dollars in aid to Afghanistan annually and Omar has been keeping it all to himself.

Omar is a poor excuse for a leader. I saw his abandon house on TV. This creep lives like a king. While his people are living without electricity and running water.

Just a figurehead frontman for Bin Laden. This makes him an accessory to about 6,000 murders. Again, I love seeing "Great" votes and no words to back them up...
