Not a handsome-hunk type, he was very good in some really good movies, especially the ones directed by Orson Welles. "Shadow of a Doubt" for Hitchcock was one of his best too. He is so believable in that role as a thoroughly rotten human being it is often hard to watch. "The Third Man" is one of my favorites.

Joseph Cotten didn't have the aw shucks good guy charm of James Stewart, the British appeal of Alec Guinness or Laurence Olivier, the suaveness of Clark Gable, the angst of James Dean, the wry sense of humor of Cary Grant, the naturalness of Spencer Tracy, or the staccato way of speaking like James Cagney. But what he did have was an ubiquitous appeal. He wasn't too much of a showy actor and not too understated either. He appeared in some great films Citizen Kane, The Magnificent Ambersons, The Third Man, The Farmer's Daughter, Shadow of a Doubt, Portrait of Jennie and more.

Solid, convincing actor with the greatest voice. Very arch, nudge-wink in his delivery, the perfect choice for wiseacre roles, yet also capable of conveying gravity, dignity, class. Was great in "Citizen Kane" and masterful in "Shadow of A Doubt." Excellent performance in "The Third Man."

I thought his last name was "Cotten"...maybe I'm wrong. Still, he was a great actor who had some superb roles: Eugene Morgan in "Magnificent Ambersons" and Holly Martens in "Third Man", just mention two.

Though he was present in some of my favorite films like "Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte" and several others, I barely noticed Joseph Cotton in my early movie viewing days. He was kind of like certain types of foods you never really develop a taste for until much later in life. Once I did notice him I realized that he was a very good actor who gave an excellent delivery, created believable characterizations and had a very memorable voice. He was also just a little off-center, which is always an intriguing feature in an actor. This attribute was never more prevalent than it was in his many films with Orson Welles. Joseph Cotton could definitely hold his own as an actor and had a very long and distinguished career to prove it.
