I seem to recall Bush in 2000 stating that the federal government should stay out of the matter entirely, and then four years later right before an election proposes a Constitutional amendment at the federal level banning gay marriage. Certainly not the first politician to flip-flop on this political hot potato.

This guy elevates me, too to an art form. The chasm between his views and those of President Bush should be so stark, they could bite you. Is this what nuancing gets you? He should eschew such obfuscation. (I know, pretty shameless of me)

To say that he is against gay marriage is accurate. (He supports civil unions as opposed to marriage.) To say that he supports a Constitutional ammendment to that end is NOT accurate. Not a flip-flop but a politician trying to find a middle grounds that will please everyone. Fault him for not taking a stronger stand if you wish (I do).. but that isn't the same as flip-flopping.
