I think a lot of us believed NAFTA was going to help our economy, and the economy of Mexico(which would have helped the imigration problem), only to see corporate greed trump patriotism. I now would like to see it repealed. Some people can admit when their wrong. I'm sure our President is the same way....ooops.

jamestkirk nails it here. How is he going to transform himself away from the pliable, flexible non-decision maker into a decisive, clearly focused leader by being elected? Abichiarra's view captures the dilemma that is free trade. It is not a panacea for the US economy. It is a policy which America has subscribed to since late in the Carter administration. It doesn't create American jobs, at least not right away. It enables more countries to become trading partners with the US, which expands our economy gradually, incrementally. US companies will continue to outsource jobs, not because of NAFTA or any other trade agreement, but because it makes them more competitive in the world marketplace. It has been happening since the 1920's. Dislike NAFTA if you want to but the only credible organizations truly fighting against it are US trade unions and economic anarchist organizations.

Kerry may just be correct to be questioning the basic premise behind NAFTA, but his public ponderings is really just political pandering to voters in Midwestern states concerned about the loss of jobs that free trade supposedly brings with it. It is also very fair to say that NAFTA really isn't free trade, rather it is managed trade that at the end of the day is neo-mercantilist rather than liberal. There are tons of rules governing the NAFTA trade regime, reality is that free trade agreements are not supposed to be that complex. Yes, I do say that free trade ultimately brings benefits to everyone, I'm all for that goal, but trade must also be fair as well.

This is sitting on the fence. He is trying to get votes anyway he can. It's superficial, and it is not leadership. Define your views as a candidate. Don't lean one way and then go the other.

Many of us who thought it was a good idea at the time now have our doubts about it.
