It wouldn't work, state by state. There are certain states that don't want this. Texas is one of them. Could you imagine him coming home after doing that to them? He'd have to go into hiding... So the constitutional thing is not something he is willing to do.

The context in which Bush supported the states deciding the issue is through the democratic process- like in Connecticut. This amendment proposal was a reaction to tyrannical jurists imposing their standard of ethics on the people through usurpative acts from the bench. There is no inconsistency in the positions, though I would agree with Abichara that there was a bit of politics involved- this amendment has no chance of passing.

A flip-flop that was made primarily to shore up his conservative base. Bush knows that the odds of this admendment passing through a constitutional convention are next to nil. This is a question that is best left to the individual states and chances are it is going to stay that way for the meantime.

More proof that he is a closet religious nut. . .not the centrist intelligent faithful man as he presented himself to be. Shamefully used the 'gay marriage' issue as a crowbar during election time. . .aren't you gay-haters mad that your fearless leader won't touch this issue today with a 10 foot pole? Where's your outrage? Dubya doesn't wanna ban sissies after all. . .you mad?

This doesn't PROVE that Bush hates gays...but it sure doesn't mean he loves them...if any person is willing to take away the love of 2 people without feeling bad about it...then I would say that person doesn't love them by any means...

Bush specifically said in 2000 that as President he would leave the issue of gay marriage up to the states. Now, in response to rulings in Massachusetts and elsewhere, he wants a constitutional amendment banning it everywhere, although he also specifically stated that he would not support such an amendment during the 2000 campaign. This sounds like a flip-flop to me. He's merely doing this to please his conservative base that are particularly angered by the President's stance on other issues. Nevertheless, the position he is taking now is quite different in contrast to the one he took in 2000.
