Yes, the war has cost over 300 billion dollars in a just cause but non-defense spending has increased by an egregious 33% on Bush's watch- completely unacceptable in light of his statements while running for office. He's literally doubled education funding, increased farm welfare and started a completely new prescription drug entitlement program the cost of which we haven't yet begun to bear.

Again, 9/11 is the excuse. Bush will be milking it for the duration of his tenure.

How much do you think it cost to fund the recovery and cleanup for the 9-11 disaster? How much added spending was there for the Homeland Security? How much did Bush add to the intelligence budget? Which I admit was sorely lacking! As Kirk mentioned, we had a war that was not forseen. Now let me give you some REAL numbers Magellan!!!
List of Kerry's wastefull Tax plan and Campaign promises...
Near-Universal Health Care Coverage-895 Billion!!!
Fully Fund Head Start-58 Billion!!! My take is this is optional and parents should burden the load!
Increase Federal Pell Grant funding-16 billion!
Here is a good one!!!! This is brilliant!
Fund Urban Park and Recovery Program-7.25 billion!!! Great idea!!!
Bush took alot of flak for his comments on space exploration.
Kerry-Increase NASA research-5.6 billion!!
My favorite, Increase funding for drug treatment program. 1.3 billion! We already have that it is called JAIL!!!
Now, would someone on the left explain these??? No rush Magellan!!!

As Redoedo mentions, it has been well documented that the Bush Administration's massive spending increases is largely driven by non defense spending. I haven't seen any reasonable justification for this - as I've said in other posts, his spending and expansion of federal government would make a liberal proud. Can anyone on the right address this?

 | Redoedo (40) 06/17/2004 | No one with half a brain can deny that Bush is a big spender. You would think that in the midst of a war, Bush would have the political courage to hold the line on spending. The deficit was not caused by the war on terrorism. In fact, if you take the entire cost of the Iraq war and the operation in Afghanistan, most of the cost both wars could have been paid for using the $200+ Billion surplus from FY 2001. Instead, Bush squandered that surplus with loads of new spending while at the same time cutting taxes. That's simply bad economics. Only 20% of the deficit, if that, can be attributed to the wars. In fact, if the deficit was because of the War on Terrorism, the deficit this year would only be around $100 Billion. Over 80% of the debt incurred under Bush is a result of the structural deficit that now exists. The tax cuts signed by the President have resulted in reduced revenue, while spending continues to rise dramatically (non-defense spending has increased 27% under this president in just four years). As long as that structural deficit continues to exist, we will be running deficits for quite some time. The only way to get rid of that deficit, unfortunately, is to either cut spending or raise taxes, neither of which Bush seems willing and able to do.
