She did some pretty good stuff, such as the "Tapestry" album-especially "I feel the Earth Move Under my Feet".

Terrific voice and some damn good songs. . .

I gave her a negative rating in another category. I apologize for that. I was off base. I may not like everything but she has made some good music and also written songs that others recorded.

Tapestry is a great album to listen too. Maybe she is more like a smother voice, almost as wild looking version of janis Joplin. Her songs though are much better than Joplin's.

Carole King was so ahead of her time. Most female artists at the time were singing folk music with the exception of a couple of rock groups at the time, and Carole King had her own style and stood out in a crowd.

Carole King was an integral part of the music of the 60s with her writing for the girl groups and the Monkees. She paralleled the women's movement by breaking out of the "Brill Building Prison" and expressing the emotions of an independent women. Tapestry was was full of that expression.

Never liked her solo career, but she's a hell of a songwriter, with an enormous number of hits written for other artists. "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow" is a simply gorgeous tune. One of my favorite songs penned by her was 'I Wasn't Born to Follow," memorably done by The Byrds in both their Notorious Byrd Brothers album and in the soundtrack for Easy Rider.

A real good writer and arranger of music. She should probably be one of the most important women of music. She is one of the best contributors to music.

She will go down in history for provinding us with clasics like the Locomotion, Wikk you still love me Tomorrow, I'm into Something Good, You've got a Friend, Pleasant Valley Sunday, Natural Woman, It's too late, Jazz Man, Hard Rock Cafe, Hi-de-Ho, Goin Back, and that is just off the top of my head. I saw her in SF in 2004 and her show was 3 hours long, full of charm, amazing music and she even wrote a song on stage for us. An amazing yet relunctant performer. VH1 placed her in the 60's of the most influencial people in Rock and Roll....that was right above Madonna. The also named her as the #10 female Rock star of all times. I think history will raise her standing. I am a fan if you could not tell.

UPDATE: OMG...I confess...it was me, it was me!!! As hard as it is to believe, one of the GODLIKE moderators made a mistake. Congatulations to the slueth who found it!!! Yes, yes! I always for some weird reason confused these two singers. And guess what - I still think they are both stink-o. I don't expect that opinion to be shared by all so please, refrain from writing me about it and concentrate on your own opinion! Thanks. CB ~ ORIGINAL REVIEW (with correction): I remember when she was extremely popular and I'm sure she still has a lot of die-hard fans. I also recognize her talents as a songwriter. But for some reason Carole King's voice has always grated on my nerves. It comes across just this side of a whine and seems to drone on and on.

Carole King's contribution to American songwriting and to the history, yes the history, of rock 'n roll is equalled but unsurpassed. Her voice, yes imperfect, is wonderful for that very reason. It's like a friend singing to you... warm, emotional, flawed, but capable of carrying incredible warmth and emotion. NOTE: THERE IS AN IDIOTIC REVIEW, BELOW, IN WHICH THE REVIEWER CLAIMS TO HATE CAROLE KING'S SINGING VOICE, YET QUOTES FROM A CARLY SIMON SONG; HE DOESN'T KNOW WHAT HE'S TALKING ABOUT.

Carole King is one of the few artists who laid a solid foundation for the modern singer/songwriter. I prefer to hear Carole sing her own songs because they have far more emotional depth than the glossy, overproduced chart toppers. Understandably this is a matter of taste. In her earlier albums Carole gives raw interpretation to her masterpieces... most frequently accompanied by herself on the piano. As a piano player I enjoy hearing the unique layering of chords that is ever present in her songs. If you are a fan of the singer/songwriter genre... you probably already own many of these albums. If you are new to Carole King I would suggest Tapestry as a solid introduction. Tapestry will have plenty of recognizable tunes that you've probably heard performed by other artists.

Carole King is in the Songwriter's Hall of Fame largely for writing songs (with Gerry Goffin) to be performed by others. Emerging as a performer in her own right in the '70s, she revealed herself as her own best interpreter. As mentioned by others here, she lacks a great singing voice and instrumental virtuosity. However, her passionate delivery always trumps her limitations.

Pretty good singing voice but i give her mostly credit for writing some great songs. She has contributed more with her song writing.

She's not much of a singer and player, but she is one of the greatest songwriters of the past 60 years. Wrote dozens of classics, standards, some of the finest pop songs of all time.

Great lyricist and songwriter..."It's Too Late" is awesome...her collaboration with the author Maurice Sendak in "Really Rosie" is fantastic. It's a great musical treat for kids and adults alike. Her talent is very rare...a musical treasure that has stood the span of time.

I have so much respect for Carole King, one of best songwriters ever. Her album "tapestry" is a must have for any serious music fan - such emotion and talent.
Potch1214 11/29/2001
One of the best songwriters in Rock history. A damned fine piano player with a sweet, homey voice. She also puts on a great concert. (And she's still a knockout in her 50's!)

A legendary songwriter and vocalist. An elite female artist.

She's an awesome songwriter. I love the whole Brill Building deal: I guess in the 60s she was just the girl whose last name showed up in parentheses next to "Goffin" under just about every other hit record title. "Up on the Roof," "Natural Woman," "Pleasant Valley Sunday," and "Locomotion" are just a few ones she wrote that were made famous by others. Then she took it upon herself to sing her own songs- "Tapestry" is good, and I hear "Really Rosie" is a good album too. Her voice isn't the best, but it isn't too bad. And be nice- if you wrote that many good songs, wouldn't you want to sing them also? Carole seems like such a friendly person. And she's done a good job of accepting that she's a better songwriter than performer.

I rate Carol King a three because she is a terrific lyricist and songwriter. However, she should stay in the area where she is talented and stay away from being a vocalist. She does not have a good singing voice and has no stage presence. Her personal sound is not appealing to me. Just a little trivia for die hard music fans: When Carol King and Gerry Goffin were married, Little Eva was their maid. They wrote "The Locomotion" for her and produced her "Locomotion" single and album. Little Eva went from long time duster to short time diva with her one hit - "The Locomotion" written by her employers Carol King and Gerry Goffin.
