Boost Mobile

If you don't mind a phone without all the bells and whistles of today's phones, this may be a prudent choice for you. I switched over from Verizon wireless to Boost about 6 months ago, and I have to say Boost phones do indeed lack the features and asthetics of more modern phones. But seeing that I was tired of being locked into contracts, and didn't mind not having an MP3 player in my phone (that I previously never used with my old KRZR) I opted to go through Boost.
The downsides however may be more of a turn-of to some people:
I live in Chicago, so I'd imagine that the signal strength is pretty strong compared to places of some of the other reviewers, I've never dropped a call here. But with the first phone (one of the cheap $30 ones) I did have the problem of having to re-dial numbers sometimes for them to go through. I "upgraded" (If you can call it that, phone's still not the best) to the i335 and I don't have the problem of having to redial either.
Admittedly I text a lot more than I talk now, and texting can sometimes be a hassle. Most texts are gotten on time, but some aren't. Honestly if I had to put a number on it, I'd say 80-90% of the texts I recieve are on time, 10-20% aren't. Unfortunately that 10-20% can sometimes be important, and not being on time doesn't just mean 20 or 30 minutes not on time (though, presumably it can include that) but sometimes I may not recieve a text for hours, I can be texting the GF at night, and the next morning at work a text will come through from her, from last night. Not good if someone sends you an important text that just so happnes to fall in that 10-20% range.
But as many people have said, you get what you pay for. And I was tired of paying ludicrous amounts of money for my one phone plan, the base plan being 59.99, but every month after fees and taxes ended up paying close to $100.00 a month. Since I text so much, the $1 a day chat plan ended up working well for me, I found the $50 plan even to be overkill, because I don't talk that much to warrant getting unlimited minutes and texts too.
Another downside is the customer service, you can tell that it has been licensed to independent contractors, sometimes I'll speak to someone in India, sometimes someone with a southern twang in their voice (Texas maybe?), other times I've talked to someone with a Boston-esque sounding accent. The different accents aren't problematic though. What is to me, and this just may be a pet peeve to me, but the automated part is too Hip Hop for me. "Yo, thank you for calling Boost mobile, hold times, blah, blah, blah..... oh, and just so you know your phone calls may be recorded for quality assurance."
I guess this is because they are trying to cater to a younger demo, but still I am that exact demo (20-28, "urban," college student, etc) and it still feels like I'm being placated. I ain't feeling the phone company, tryna come at me like they neighborhood hustler son!!!! Seriously, I wish it was a little more professional and not so hip-hop, I like and expect that from friends and family, and what not, not from the phone company.
