The first 20 minutes depicting the D-Day invasion on Omaha Beach in Saving Private Ryan are THE most realistic I've ever seen in any war movie. Period. It is, in my opinion, the best battle scene ever put into a war film.

An absolutely accurate depiction of battle, showing that no amount of basic training could have prepared those troops for what they were to experience, bullets whizzing&shells exploding all around totally gripping. One got the feeling that were they there would they have survived, pure luck. The underwater sequence, horribly great.Overall great opening, though there weren't just troops, where were the tanks being blown up by German 88's,should have been included.

The opening scene of the invasion of Omaha Beach was unbeatable(Afterwards,I thought Saving Private Ryan, was basically a TV movie).

The opening scene (i.e., the assault landing) was likely the best battle scene ever filmed. I was particularly impressed by the sound of the bullets pinging off of the steel beach obstacles. The whole sequence was excellent, although in my estimation the film went downhill from there for many reasons. Although I've addressed the particulars in an earlier post, basically there were too many technically incorrect or impossible things that happened, as well as unbelievable personal actions or reactions throughut the film. Spielberg needed a better technical adviser.

Watching this scene, I almost feel as if I'm there. I like the effect of going under water while trying to struggle onto the beach, how the bullets make a whizzing noise when they go by, how loud explosions are followed by an ear-shattering silence. This is perhaps one of the most graphic scenes ever filmed for a war movie, but it is also, perhaps, one of the most accurate. It's so suspenseful, you don't realize you're crying 'til it's over.

If Robert Capa had a color movie camera on June 4, 1944, this is what it would have looked like.

One of the most gripping and heartwrenching scenes I have ever seen. The looks on the faces and the men vomiting as they prepared to face battle. The sounds of gunfire ripping through the air and the explosions all around.Men losing limbs and losing their lives. This was probobly pretty close to how it really was for the brave men who fought in that famous battle.

A nonstop, gut-wrenching battle from beginning to end. Practically flawless in its accuracy and portrayal. It keeps you eyes glued to the screen and your heart at the pit of your stomach. One of the best filmed battles ever.
