 | nesher (9) 04/30/2008 | Yes, yes, yes! I hate to make spelling mistakes, but I do them anyway. It would be nice if the message will be checked before submission.
BTW, I noticed, that some people report that all the boxes can be spell-ckecked through FireFox an Mac. I should digg, if this option is available for Maxthon, I am currently using...

 | Automatt (29) 04/07/2008 | I've added a spell checking function to sites before, but when it is available, people don't use it. My Mac is so awesome it has built-in spell checking in every text box anyway.
Plus, it's kind of fun to try to decode the skateboard reviews.

 | irishgit (138) 04/07/2008 | Pretty hard to spell check the endless,
"f u donut lik Emnm usuk"
or "Tony Hwk rulzz"
or "Gut a big dippa Griz in rite no and jst chilln'"
but for the folks who can at least get it close it would be ok.

 | BlueOrchid (41) 08/07/2007 | I think it's important to spell correctly to get a helpful on reviews and also to get your point across and have people understand it. I come across too many people who don't know how to spell or are just plain lazy.

 | Randyman (103) 03/12/2007 | A slell (was that ironic or what but it proves my point, jeez what timing of course I meant SPELL) check would be nice, but just as important to me would be the ability to go back and correct my spelling without reposting my review, especially when the review becomes dated and if posted at a later date it just wouldn't make any sense. There is nothing worse (to me) than to be reading through my reviews and have an obvious mispelling jump out of the screen at me. Not a big deal to some but it bugs me.

 | pugwash01 (15) 03/12/2007 | This would be very good!! I hate having to cut and paste, to check everything over. I think it would only make it better for RIA reviewers!

 | DumbBlondeCowgirl (23) 05/07/2006 | It would be a blessing to have spell check. I do sometimes make mistakes. Mostly when I'm tired. It would be nice to be able to correct the errors.

 | Ih8rateitall (5) 05/07/2006 | I would like to see this feature. I have been flamed by people because of my spelling. I'm not a spelling bee champion, but as long as people understand what I'm trying to say, I'll manage.

 | JonTheMan (27) 03/22/2006 | I concur with PG. An "Edit" option whereby you could edit old posts without reposting them would be a godsend.
This is particularly true for me as it appears, for some bizarre reason, that all the quotation marks from all of my posts from before a few months ago have mysteriously disappeared. I think some apostrophes and hyphens may be missing as well. This is problematic for two reasons;
a) It makes my earlier posts look even worse than they already were.
b) I've quoted some pretty unpleasant people in my posts, like Ann Coulter and Adolf Hitler (who is almost as right-wing as Ann Coulter!) for example, and it may now appear that quotes from others are now my own opinions. Not a pleasant thought.
Ideally, I'd like to replace the all the errant punctuation without either needlessly re-posting or losing a substantial chunk of my helpfuls.

 | PlanetaryGear (52) 03/22/2006 | This wouldn't be a bad idea, but what would also be a good idea would be an "EDIT" option which would allow you to correct errors in old posts without bringing them back up into the "recent comments" page or the "recommendation engine". Alot of my old posts entail various debates, flame wars, yesterdays news, etc, etc, that I would just assume not rehash but would like to correct them for posterites sake. It would also be nice to be able to edit posts without losing a billion helpfuls in the process like you do now everytime you "UPDATE" or edit.

 | Vudija (92) 03/11/2006 | I understand that some times, especially during a heated debate, the chances of typos are going to arise (mentioned because a lot of the issue may be linked solely to a typo, instead of actual poor spelling abilities). Having spell check would eliminate both reasons for the errors in comments. I think this would be beneficial to the site, assuming that it dwouldn't slow the system down.

 | sfalconer (21) 12/02/2004 | This is only a good idea if it does not slow the web site down. I have not seen a lot of bad spelling but I am sure it would help.

 | VirileVagabond (32) 08/04/2004 | A spell checker would be a bonus, but not a necessity. My biggest concern is that such a feature may slow the site and rating process down. Presently, I will often test a comment in a word processor to check for spelling before I submit, and I assume that most everyone can do the same if motivated. Thankfully, RateItAll eventually fixed the bug that cleared the helpful/not helpful clicks when one revised a comment. This allows one to subsequently clean up the spelling without losing the feedback history.

 | Blanco~Nino (0) 07/22/2004 | I'm suprised a spell check has yet to exist on the web site. Let's face it, we all make type-o's and they can sometimes make words into other words, or even make your comment unreadable. I think we have a responsiblity to each other. That being that we should all make the commonts written on this site coherent and easy to read. You should not have to stress to be able to read these comments. You should be able to sit back with an open mind and concentrate on the idea, not the grammar. Spell check will end that problem.

 | twinmom101 (31) 05/15/2003 | Personally, I think it's a great idea. I can't help that a pet peeve of mine is bad grammar and spelling, so this drives me crazy. I know some people want to keep this site laissez-faire, but there is nothing wrong with having as many comments that are as well-written as possible. Please bear in mind that my wish for better grammar and writing on this site is just that- my own opinion and if we are entitled to write whatever crap, good or bad we want, then I have a right to dislike it and state my opinion as such.

 | RebelYell1861 (9) 04/23/2003 | Even though it's almost embarrassing to see how some people on here spell, I still think it's pointless to add this feature. These are mere comments, not government documents. And anyway it helps to show some raters' ignorance. If it means that much to you, just pick up a dictionary.

 | Janey_Lane (0) 01/30/2003 | Being that English is not my native language (Swedish is) I sometimes make spellingmistakes that I don't even realize are mistakes until waaaaaay later when I've already recieved helpful/not helpful ratings I don't really care to lose. And after that it just sits around bugging the... living daylights out of me! It also makes some reviews a bit hard to follow, if the reviewer has made some big change in the spelling of a certain word. Now spell-checking is not a very big, huge, important thing but it could come in handy for those of us who don't like to misspell words or indeed like to read misspelled words.

 | sperryc (29) 11/07/2002 | Short comments like "Aerosmith blows" and "Go Huskies!" are pretty pointless, but along similar lines, comments that are so long that writers feel like they can't take the time to check their own spelling have to go also...

 | john davies (2) 02/28/2002 | I'm certainly no great typist and when rushing to submit a comment before my wretched computer disconnects(i'm also hardly a whizz with computers, but understand this is really the Internet Service Provider's fault)i tend to omit letters etc, then get irritated to notice them too late,as with my last comment.I certainly hope i don't adversely judge any RIA user whose spelling may be poor,-the quality of what's actually said is what's important-but some might do so,and i think it a pity any of us should feel embarrassed.I wonder though if a spell-check might alter British spellings e.g."favourite",to American, which i'd prefer didn't happen,as i'm quite attached to what i'm used to doing. Also i wouldn't want it to slow down the site noticeably,as some expect and fear would happen.A long way of saying,i'm in favour, but with a couple of definite provisos.Anyway, have a lovely day, everyone.

 | Talena (0) 11/07/2001 | I think that would be a great idea! I find that sometimes after I have posted a comment, I have mispelled a word or two, and the only way to fix the mistakes is to change your comment, but if someone has already rated your comment as helpful, then changing your comment to fix the spelling errors erases that...it's very frustrating sometimes. It would be very useful to have a spellcheck before posting a comment...that way there would be no spelling mistakes, less confusion, and comments would be easier to read.
(2 voted this helpful, 0 funny and 0 agree) |
 | TheFreak (3) 10/06/2001 | For the sake of my sanity, this must be done! I had a typo in my original Ronald Reagan comment...I spelled the word "depression" wrong. then, someone (I forget who) sent me a personal message that told me since I didn't even know how to spell "depression", my opinion wasn't worth reading. And I know others have had similar things happen to them. The way people look down on others for their typing skills or spelling level is ridiculous! But since I'm not going to change the minds of these people, I want to be able to spell check my comments before I go mad! Then, people can NOT jump on me for my spelling. Plus, when you go back in to correct typos, you lose all your "helpful" ratings. This is always very annoying. A spellchecker is a must for us users. Take care, everyone!

 | sunny184 (0) 10/03/2001 | From reading the comments in here, this feature is needed. I have to go back and fix some of my own comments at times.
(2 voted this helpful, 0 funny and 0 agree) |
 | MedgarEvers (14) 09/24/2001 | Not a bad idea, not the best either. I've seen plenty o' typos, but then again, we're talking about the "ability to spell-check comments." So some people still won't even care if they're writing is grammatically correct and just submit their reviews anyway. And I don't think it would work very well if RateItAll banned reviews with typos from being posted. So if you really care how correct your comments are, paste them into Word and check it there or something. A spell-checker at the site could be a nice luxury, but not as important as other improvements, such as adding more categories and more topics.

 | abichara (60) 09/06/2001 | Adding spell-check to the website would be a great addition. Sometimes, I may be writing a comment and I may forget how a word is spelled or I may be typing fast like I am right now and I may type in the wrong button. Proper spelling in any kind of writing is critical to the presentation of any argument. Rate-It-All, in their mission to provide a free forum for people to give their opinions about current and past issues, should provide a spell-check to clarify an authors argument.

 | shacharg (0) 07/23/2001 | Generally, this is a very useful feature.
However, it can slow the site's speed drastically due to high processing power needed to be used by the server to run spell-check scripts. I believe that most of the 'slow-speed' experienced by the users, who voted high at the "Make the Web site faster" suggestion, is caused by server overload. This happens due to the high use of ASP scripts (which also include saving data). Another demanding ASP script will slow down the servers even more.
Of course there is always the possibility of upgrading the servers before adding the spell-check script.
I suggest you use other spelling/dictionary tools instead, such as Babylon, which is a favorite program of mine.

 | pedrogouveia (0) 07/23/2001 | This site has to improve in so many other areas that a "spell-check capability" is not trully relevant at this point in time. It's easier to just pop open MS Word and spell check, if one really cares for this feature...

Earlier I didn't care much about it, 'cause I knew I could always correct the typos I did. But when the Rate It All staff added the possibility to rate comments helpful or not-helpful, the situation change, cause if I now wanted to correct typos in my own comments, I'd probably lose one or two helpful-ratings, maybe even five or ten! So this feature would be very great to add to the site!! :-))
