 | TheHappySinner666 (5) 05/29/2007 | Marilyn's place in cinematic history is secondary to her place in cultural history. Her acting talent may not have been Academy Award material, although it was not bad at all, and her films may not be the most legendary productions, but she had an impact on American society like no other star before or since. She is one of the few true icons of cinema, her name is synonymous with the term"Sex Symbol". Only Elvis, The Beatles, Sinatra, and James Dean can share in the most rare heights of stardom that this lady reached.

 | JuneF (4) 09/14/2006 | Her movies were enjoyable and in my opinion she was a good actress. It's easy to see why she became such a legend. However, I always felt sad for her about her emotional problems which seemed to ruin her life.

 | LastMessenger3 (40) 07/23/2006 | Marilyn Manroe is a legend. She had vulnaribility and sex appeal that mixed together so well. She was a ultimately feminine woman: curvacious, emotional, gentle, and enticing. She hasn't been in many movies because of her such an early demise, but at the same time, within such a short period of time, she captivated and inprisoned us all with her unpretentous mannerism and sexy features. Her voice is incomparable and her persona is unforgettable.

 | miketou (5) 11/08/2005 | This woman was pure magic. She practically glowed on film. The voice, the sex appeal, the vulnerability, the dumb blond persona--it all worked. The end result was an unforgettable actress. She must have been a good actress because people confused the persona with the real person. With all her problems, addictions, etc., Marilyn was not as dumb as she pretended to be. She actually worked hard to perfect that persona and ended up being victimized by it. Even though she is no longer with us, she will always be embeddied in American culture.

 | 70smooveesfan (1) 04/15/2004 | I grew up idolising the woman. She was supremely beautiful - almost no-one took a better photo than her. It's just a pity that that beautiful package caused so many people to overlook, or exploit the talent and sensativity underneath. Sometimes wish for her sake she had been born in another era where she could have been recognised for all her talents. However, a product of the times, and its not as though some of the beautiful actresses of today don't still have to battle the same boring old stereotypes. Although Marilyn is seen as a victim, I don't think she would have appreciated being remembered as a 'tragic figure', but rather for the positive enjoyment her art brought to people.

 | handy (0) 03/14/2004 | Marilyn was a great actress. She was so gorgeous that people overlooked her grat talent. She was great in serious roles and in comedies. Very few people know that she was extremely intelligent. She also was one of the most beautiful and sexy women ever. I just wish that she had the sense to stay away from JFK and Robert Kennedy instead of having affairs with them. Nonetheless, she is an all-time great actress.

 | Goldberry (0) 06/11/2003 | Undoubtably one of the most beautiful women to ever be on the big screen. Personally one of my favorite actresses. All her movies are pretty good, never amazing however because cutesey comedy movies worked better for her. I really liked her because even though she obviously had a tough life off the camera she always got the job done and did the best she could in the end. I didn't give her a "great" rating because i think she didn;t really reach her full potential as an actress. She was talented enough to be in meaningful films that require serious acting, but she was just a sex symbol with the common purpose of making money with her movies. I gave her the "good" rating because she worked well with what she had.

 | JTree (0) 02/24/2003 | I believe that the key to Marilyn is that she is unique. There is no one like her and she can't be imitated. After forty years, she is as great an icon as she ever was. Some of her performances were outstanding in spite of her personal problems.

 | Errol (5) 03/12/2002 | I have always been a big fan of the 50s era but Marilyn is one part of the 50s I never got that excited about. I like "Some Like It Hot" and "The Seven Year Itch" just because they are well made movies - but not primarily because of her. She was sort of a sex symbol but I never necessarily saw the point of a sex symbol. I preferred the every-day type of girls in movies. But Marilyn was interesting and okay.

 | josefinas (0) 12/08/2001 | If sex is a drug, then Marilyn is selling it, and it ain't legal. She was a brunette, then became a blonde. She was just another girl, then became a sex goddess. She was chubby, then became the queen of curves. She was loved, then nobody wanted to love her for real. She was alive, then she was dead.
Story of a girl. STOP

 | Honey Rider (0) 11/04/2001 | She was, still is, and will always be the screen goddess of all time. Marilyn was more than a pretty face but unfortunately, the pretty face was the only thing many people wanted to see. They did not see, or perhaps did not want to see all the pain and troubles this woman had to endure throughout her life. It's a pity no one saw that and tried to help her before it was too late. It's also a shame that she did not live long enough to become a serious actress, which is what she wanted, because in the Misfits she gave one of her most brilliant performances ever. The motion picture business has not been the same and will never be the same without this woman. Today we have cheap imitations and wannabe's but they are no competition to Marilyn. No other actress has that Marilyn quality. Which is not such a bad thing because I sure as hell would not like to see Marilyn replaced by disposable talent. It's a shame that she is not with us and can't see how much the world still loves her. Long live Marilyn.

 | ellajedlicka21 (5) 10/25/2001 | DiMaggio wasn't right for Marilyn. He wanted a low-key marriage, while Marilyn wanted to always be in the spotlight. It is awesome how Elton wrote "Candle in the Wind" for her, Norman Jean.

 | MedgarEvers (14) 10/24/2001 | Umm...the most beautiful woman to ever grace this Earth. Beauty on the inside, beauty on the outside. Her ghost is chasing me, you know. It seems whenever I turn on the t.v. there's some biography about her, more and more I've seen pictures of her on news websites and such that wouldn't usually have pictures of her. I'm flattered. But then again, her lousy husband Dimaggio wasn't the most attractive guy, either. Marilyn Monroe is lovable and beautiful.

 | thekettleblack (0) 08/11/2001 | Is there any woman who doesn't wish she could be Marilyn? Her legacy has withstood alot of criticism, and she'll only get popular with time. And it's no wonder - as long as today's movie theatres are filled with lackluster actresses with less sex appeal than an apple peel - as long as Hollywood pushes women to be unattractively and unhealthfully thin - as long as people can still appreciate real comedy, classic stars like Marilyn Monroe will never be forgotten or outdated.

 | music4every1 (0) 02/16/2001 | My first sight of Marilyn Monroe was in the move, "Some Like It Hot." In it, she was gorgeous, mysterious, sexy, a comedian, and overall, made the movie very delightful. Then I saw her in my second favorite Marilyn Monroe movie, "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes." It is now one of my favorite films of all time. She delivers her lines perfectly . . . from the light, airy sound of "'Scuse me a minute!" to the low, comedic sound of "Just a touch of laryngitis I guess."
She was certainly an extraordinary actres . . . and more than that, she was an extraordinary person. Her charm, voice, style, and manner won over this country . . . even if they were not able to win Marilyn over in the end.
She has such an amazing life, and if you all are interseted in the many details that made her so irresistible (from poor town to rich Hollywood) I reccomend a book, entitled "Marilyn Monroe," by Barbara Leaming.

 | CastleBee (83) 02/08/2001 | Since her death in 1962, she has become one of several cartoon-like American icons. But, never doubt it; Norma Jean could act and the character she played best was Marilyn Monroe. The blonde bombshell routine had already been well established (Harlow, Mae West, etc.) when she changed her name, her nose, and her hair color. Still, she managed to take this hackneyed role and put her own spin on it, and, in the process, gave it more depth and character making it uniquely her own. This was no dumb blonde accident; she knew exactly what she was doing. Her movie roles were predictable, but always very well done. Sadly, she was more often than not relegated to light comedy blonde bimbo parts rather than anything that might have tapped into a deeper talent that we can, nevertheless, still sense in her work. This may have been because her ability was always upstaged and hidden by her overt sex appeal or, perhaps, simply ignored in favor of it. Sex, after all, is the proven big seller and nowhere has it been a more lucrative commodity than Hollywood. This exploitive attitude toward her and toward herself and maybe even a lack of confidence on some level crippled any chances she may have had to be taken completely seriously in her day. Had she lived and been able to shake the sex goddess thing - which would have obviously been easier to do as time went by - perhaps she would have moved into the kind of roles that would have changed the public perception of her. But, much like the circumstances of her death, whether or not this could have actually happened will remain forever part of the Monroe mystique.

 | Johnny Roulette (3) 01/03/2001 | Marilyn Monroe was more than just a pretty face. She was a very gifted comedic talent. You can find ample proof of this in Some Like It Hot & Seven Year Itch. Her drama skills were good and steadily improving...as can be seen in Don't Bother To Knock, Bus Stop & The Misfits. She also pulled off mystery/noir fairly well in Niagra. It's a shame that the studios didn't give her more shots at the serious roles she craved. We'll never see how good she could have been, as her smile and walk left her desperately stereotyped.
