Down syndrome is a type of mental retardation. Some have it very severe and some have it mild. Down's Syndrome children have been likened to simian creatures in old medical books. (Add picture)

CanadaSucks, I believe you have missed the point of this arguement, and why it doesn't work. A birth defect is not excuse enough to kill a human being, either while still in the womb (abortion) or later in life (euthanasia). That being said, while I would counsel someone against an abortion, I also believe that decision, and the consequences thereof, to be the ultimate responsibility of the individual, and not for me or the government to decide. Moral decisions like this are hard to legislate, and even harder to enforce.

Irrelevant issue. . .a woman controls her body. . .all else is intrigue.

Parenting as a lifelong commitment comes slamming home when you see your baby with down syndrome for the first time. The scan showed very low risk, and if it had been high I would have been counselled toward termination of the pregnancy. At this end of the events, I cannot say what decision I would have made. I am grateful that she has no major problems with heart or hearing or eyes or feeding, and sad that the specialist diagnostic care she has access to is not available to every child. Learning difficulties are a given, learning is often difficult. What it means for me is that I cannot, as with bright naturally physical children, leave her to her own devices. The funny thing is that if you leave bright physically active children to their own devices they fail to flourish.Any retrospective analyses fail the first hurdle. Humans are adaptable, and don't own time machines that go backwards.I struggle to think of any bad that will come from my daughter's existence that is not at heart merely my own self centred avoidance of imagined difficulties.

17th Century Germany...A man and woman have a child, it is born crippled. They have a second, it has clubfeet,a third it is blind. They have 8 children each with a disability.Their 9th child is born deaf. You would have thought they would have given up by the 3rd or 4th child.Nowdays these kids might have been aborted. You and I know this 9th deaf child to be Mozart!

I am certainly grateful that our children were not afflicted with Down's, but if we had learned that they were going to be that way, we would NOT have aborted them. Children of this kind tend to be very loving and they deserve to be loved back. I know a 21-year-old lady with Down's Syndrome and consider her a real friend.

I can comprehend this somewhat, but adoption is much better. You need to be a real good parent to take care of a child with mongoloidism. You have to be patient.

No. My mom had me very late in life (she was nearly 40) and the doctors kept telling her over and over that there was a good chance I would be born with Down's Syndrome. In this case, the doctors were wrong and I was not born with the syndrome. If she had listened to them and their warnings, I wouldn't be here today.

There are no justifiable reasons to directly terminate innocent human life and this is one of the most egregious. The idea that the powerful can determine who shall live and who shall die by the capricious desires of whom we deem wanted is the most vicious and disgusting of all practices. If physical evolution is our goal then I would love to be put in a closed room with some of you who believe you are so physically advanced and see how you felt about the strong and powerful imposing their will on the weak after about 5 minutes. What is the argument for you evil naifs for not killing people who become physically handicapped? I mean what exactly is your arguments against Nazi Germany? The arguments on this page are the exact reason why abortion should be illegal.

GoneAway, you hit the nail on the head. My heart hurts for all the innocent souls who were skimmed off because of defects. I belive everyone to be a child of God and choosing which ones should live is like choosing which race should live like Hitler did.

This is a senstitive matter. You would have to consider all aspects, including the quality of life both the child and the parent would have.
