Yes, so much so because 1. He wanted to keep gas prices high to please his oil company buddies or 2. He didn't do hardly anything when gas prices rose too high until recently.

It's not directly his fault but he sure as hell hasn't been trying to help either.

No; Dubya is a sociopathic scumbag, but American greed for oil certainly long pre-dates him-- it even pre-dates Reagan, another man of mediocre intellect and superficial morality who was at least able to read a ghost-written speech and make it seem as if he actually knew what he was talking about. In the early 70's, experts were declaring that we absolutely had to decrease our dependence on foreign oil, but who was listening? Might as well blame Bill Clinton for the current high prices (better than blaming him for that b-job, or Vince Foster's "suicide"), as he was assiduous in helping the Republicans accelerate the process of globalization, which led to increasing demands for oil in countries like China and India. Still, as Oscar mentions, when has Dubya EVER helped anything? On any issue you can name...the environment, international diplomacy, healthcare, the economy, etc., etc.,...his presidency has been a disgrace, an embarrassment, a repellent travesty. I thought if anything remotely positive could come out of this obscene Iraq fiasco he embroiled us in, or his friendships with certain Saudi Arabians, it would at least be lower gas prices (although certainly not worth 4,000 American lives and the incalculable damage that has been wrought). Wrong again. Dubya has proven once again that he's the consummate f-up.

Sure, the President controls supply and demand. He must have a huge gas reserve in his ranch where he is creating a shortage to cause the price to increase. And he pockets all the money.

I don't believe the president is the only one responsible for the high gas prices, but certainly a key factor.

When was the last time that Bush, y'know, helped anything?

Jenna Bush got married last weekend, and gas prices shot up like 10 - 12 cents where I live.

Why should Bush do anything about gas prices? After all his family got rich from oil and I'm pretty sure his stocks are looking real good right now.

It seems like my friends on the other side of the aisle are quick to blame Bush for rising gas prices yet there has been little, if any, evaluation of laws enacted in the past by Democrats as a major contributing factor in this situation. Liberal environmental laws, or standards, have forced oil companies to refine different kinds of gasoline. This not only decreases storage capacity but the refining requirements are expensive and the costs are passed to the consumer. Because of these same laws, there has not been a new refinery built in the US since 1976. Current law disallows the building of new refineries and 19 have closed down in the last 10 years. It is also costly to keep older refineries up to standards. Because opponents prevented drilling in Alaska we are more dependent than ever on the Middle East for oil. The fact has also been overlooked that today we have the technology to drill at an angle, with no drilling equipment located on protected land itself. Some would argue that a particular drilling site would only yield 2 or 3% of our oil requirements. That may be true, however, if we drill in several sites with each one contributing 2 or 3% that number can quickly multiply to 10 to 15%. If Bush was in with Big Oil as they say, wouldn't it have made sense that in an election year he would have lowered the price of fuel? He can't do that, nor should he. That is not how government is supposed to operate. Look at areas where government has experimented, such as farming, and look where that industry is today. It is not the President's job to control prices (as Nixon learned) and the oil companies are not solely to blame. It is time for us to take a more balanced look at the laws in place and weigh the fact that with today's technology we can protect the environment and drill for oil in the United States while building cleaner refineries than was ever possible in the past. If we would do that and (heaven forbid) lower the taxes placed on fuel we would be well on our way to independence from foreign oil.

I think you hit the nail on the head, eraser. Instability in the region is causing the increase in gas prices. Why is there instability? Because the U.S. invaded and removed the government of a major oil producing nation. Nothing political here - but GWB's policy in the Middle East is as responsible as any other cause in driving up gas prices.

Sorry to the lefties, but Bush is pretty blameless here. The worst you could say is that his policies in the Middle East led to increased instability which translated to higher prices, but lets place the blame there where it belongs - with the terrorists who are directly causing higher prices by their attacks.
