Nelson Rockefeller was the liberal Republican Governor of New York from the mid-1950's until 1973. He was the grandson of magnate John Rockefeller; Nelson was seen as a rising star in Republican politics during the 1960's. He was very sharp, strong on foreign policy issues and progressive on domestic issues. He would have probably made it to the Presidency in either 1964 or 1968 had it not been for the rightward drift of the Republican party during this period. Rockefeller dumping his first wife and marrying a much younger woman just a year before the 1964 election really damaged his chances of grabbing the Republican nomination. He probably stood a halfway decent chance of beating Lyndon Johnson that year, but this bad career move probably cost him the most coveted prize in all of politics.

Rockefeller was always running ahead in the polls prior to this scandal. Edward VIII gave up the throne for the woman he loved. Rocky may have given up the White House for the woman he loved at the time, but as events proved, not to the end.
