08/01/2008 | Snakes also freak me out, but in a far more reasonable way. For instance, I may not really want to touch a friend's pet snake, but not because I think it's going to kill me, just because I'm lame. In the desert I may have an entirely different and dramatic reaction, but I think that's natural.

06/22/2008 | It is an instinctive fear, along with spiders. I think snakes have the most athletic grace of any animal family. I love watching them swim. It's amazing that they can go forward and turn so fast without flippers or fins. A human is too big for them to eat, so the only reason they'd bite is defense. That's easy to avoid; don't threaten them by stepping on or grabbing them.
