To some degree, all, or almost all, of the really great old horror actors got typecast. Lee, the star of countless Dracula films and other horror flicks for Hammer Studios in Britain, had a commanding presence and a powerful voice. While he occasionally did non-horror films, like the Bond film "The Man With The Golden Gun," the recent Star Wars movies, and his excellent performance as Saruman in LOTR, I've always felt that while he was a superb horror actor, he had the range to portray all kinds of figures, and it's too bad that in a way he got typecast.

An effective bad guy. I agree with GoneAway that he was particularly good in vampire roles.
