Not bad.It kept you watching, but it was a little "over the top".Howcome all these serial killers always have some kind of seemingly supernatural powers? Thats getting really of old in these kind of films.

Pretty good murder mystery. Fine cast, not much story but good suspense. Not for a young audience.
uncnc08 11/20/2007
What a dark movie..this movie seriously messed with my head the first time i saw it, everyone did a great job with the acting especially spacey.
fluffytuffy 06/28/2007
I think this is one of the best serial murderer movies I have seen, Pitt was OK, Freeman was great and Spacey was his usually excellent self! Twist ending, very entertaining. Definately not for the weak of stomach.
irishgit 05/23/2007
Even Spacey's usual fine performance at the end couldn't save this junk.
XAgent 05/23/2007
It's kind of an understatement but... That guy was messed up.

Don't look in the box...

One of the few great physcological thrillers out there. Kevin Spacey was fantastic as was Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt.
reaverto 04/08/2007
Kevin Spacey makes a great pyscho, truly dispicable in this role. The movie just keeps going past the normal constraints of a standard hollywood story arc. The twists and turns are unexpected and ultimately very depressing. Still worth watching...once.

Morgan Freeman and Kevin Spacey are good in whatever piece of crap they happen to find themselves. To me, that's pretty much a given. This film wasn't crap, but it was far from being any kind of classic. I have no problem re-watching a really good film; a classic film I can re-watch constantly ("The Godfather", "Aguirre, the Wrath of God", "White Heat", "Nosferatu", etc.). I have no desire to see this film ever again. While watching it, I was never able to suspend my sense of disbelief regarding the contrived plot-line for a second, which pretty much ruined the entire picture for me (I had the same reaction to "Mystic River"). As for Brad Pitt, he's at best an adequate actor, the male equivalent of Julia Roberts (he's prettier though), and added absolutely nothing to the picture. Neither did Gwyneth Paltrow.
ungodlyugly 07/13/2006
Very good because of Morgan Freeman and in spite of Brad Pitt.
echoscot 10/18/2005
Well done story. I give it a 4 though, because it is soooooo damn depressing. I didn't like feeling that way when I left the theatre
kattwoman 05/14/2005
thought it was going to be alot better. the ending was just awful.it had some talented actors but didnt seem to connect

Seven? I woulda named it eight! But who am I to say anything.
dpostoskie 04/07/2005
Top 5 ending!
Daccory 10/05/2004
Hated this film as it was very dark and created a macabre feeling in the senses. Of course, that was its intention, but a disconcerting one nevertheless.
DeShaddow 07/25/2004
This movie is gross, but such is the life of a homicide detective. Character development was also good and the villains don't come like that everyday, which makes the movie interesting to watch. Smart and stylishly done.
Jamie McBain 06/24/2004
Great film, not for the easily disturbed. Best not watched after eating food.
Opie Onion 06/19/2004
Amovie that makes you feel like jumping off a bridge. Depressing as hell.
LoneUSFullHous eFan 04/17/2004
Morgan Freeman may be one of the best actors I have ever seen. An excellent psychological thriller harmed only in my opinion by Brad Pitt's tendancy to overact in some of the scenes. The film is living proof that high insanity and high intelegence are a dangerous combination.
ClassicTVFan47 03/11/2004
I agree with Irishgit: junk!
Sheba 09/05/2003
The monologue given by Kevin Spacey near the climax of the film, was so brutally honest. Truly Justifiable Homicide.
Redoedo 05/19/2003
This was one hell of a movie. A word of advice, if you decide to watch this, don't eat dinner while you are watching it. There are a lot of graphic scenes in this film, but that just adds to the creepiness of the film. The plot is very, very provocative and disturbing, and I thought that Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman had a unique chemistry together. Pitt was definately at his best in this film. And Kevin Spacey was wonderful in his short appearance towards the end of the film. This film never lost my interest in its 2+ hours, and is definately one of the best thrillers out there, and definately the best psycological thriller since "Silence of the Lambs".
kamylienne 05/16/2003
This is one creepy movie! Definately a great storyline, Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt were great. VERY graphic (if you don't like graphic and bizarre depictions of death, you might want to skip this one). Very dark, very disturbing, there were a few "jumpable" scenes there (shocking to the point where you kind of jump out of the seat).
Aurielle 04/13/2003
Terrifying and very deeply disturbing. To make matters worse, I watched this movie when it was first released on video several years ago -- and I was still in my preteens. It terrified me and still gives me chills when I think about it. It is powerful and scary and definitely good for those nights when you want something to watch with your friends. One suggestion, though: Don't rent it for your kid's sleepover. Please, no. They'll never, ever sleep again. . .

I'd say that this is one of the few movies where Brad Pitt excels (along with Fight Club) Morgan Freeman is fantastic as always and together you have a brilliant realtionship. This film is extremely dark and full of suspense. Each mrder is gory and you get to hear or see it in great detail. The tension mounts as the film progresses and it certainly has a climatic ending. The music is really good (opening music by NIN) and I love the opening and ending credits. An absolute masterpiece.

This movie is downright creepy and scary, but the ending totally ruined it for me. I am very tempted to ruin the ending for anyone who hasn't seen it, but I won't. Let's just say, they could have done it a million better ways.

i loved the odor-eater trees that are typically hung on car mirrors. and when that guy 'woke up' i nearly sh*t myself. i didnt even realize that lil rat was kevin spacey. his career seemed to explode after seven. or i was not paying attention before. cool stuff.

The other comments in this section are pretty much right on. THE definitive serial killer movie and one of the great movies of the nineties. Performances, script, direction, everything is top-notch.
loki13 11/14/2001
An awesome movie. Brad Pitt can be an excellent actor when he isn't playing such a Nancy boy as he plays in most movies. Kevin Spacey was the perfect villan for this movie.
cde1970 10/23/2001
Absolutely thrilling. A real chiller, dark, moody and disturbing film. Great acting, direction is first rate, using the subtle script to its best right upto the terrific denouement.

Se7en is one of those rare films that not only astounds the viewer while it is playing before their eyes, but burns an imprint in their mind long after the final credits have rolled. And for a serial killer film to be memorable at all is a great feat in itself. Not only has this movie got an impeccable cast, script, direction, etc., but the only thing UNoriginal about it is that it involves a serial killer. Everything else about it is innovative and thought provoking. A city drowned by a monsoon may not be an original film idea, but a city in sunny California being pelted by an endless downpour is! The cinematography was in color, but the only colors vivid in the film were greys, dingy browns, and black! The serial killer involving the cops in his scheme of things to be the final victim is something that is astonishing! With Spacey's monologue the viewer may find himself/herself making sense of murders that were so senseless and inhuman and with that the serial killer brings the average, normal person to his level of reason. What is so ironic about this film is that John Doe seems to be the one trying to find God in a place where God just doesn't exist- the relentless rain and muted colors are a sign of that and, in the final scene, the roles of victim and killer are reversed. Every time I see this film, (15x and counting) I can't help but to be left in bewilderment and in awe!
HughJackman's "mate" 04/07/2001
Yuck. This movie grossed me out so much. There was so much gore and blood (and it looked completely real, too), that I think I almost threw up in the beginning of the movie. Very good plot though, and Kevin Spacey is (like I always say) one of the brightest stars in the sky! He can be picked out immediately in a crowd. I would have given the movie a five it they wouldn't have shown the scene of the obese man at the beginning of the movie. I'd give it a 4.8 if I could, but it was just too gross..

David Fincher is god!!!!!

A mystrious movie with good story. For you who likes wicked murders want to see this one.

David Fencher is my hero. He has made two of the best and most significant(you wouldn't think it just by watching them) films ever.Fight Club and of course, the greatest serial killer film ever, Seven. Brilliantly dark, geniuosly creative and sickly perfect this film is a marvel. This movie will keep you going and disturb depths of your psychie you never knew existed. This is amovie based around a killer that is killing according to the Seven deadly sins. Gluttony, sloth, greed, pride, lust, wrath and envy. The two protaganists of this film are played masterflly by the always impressive Morgan Freeman and the always pretty and well acting Brad Pitt. The killer kills(most of the time) in a very grissly, nasty, realalistic fashion that will give you goosebumps and make your stomach turn. Theonly nice thing is, you never see the killer kill, you only see the outcome. Dark, surreal and excitting. Thanl you David for the macabre masterpeice of the 90's. Spawned some of the worst cory cat movies ever. Bone Collector,The Watcherand countless others. This is the original. The one that started it all.The only one you should see!
magellan 11/16/2000
An amazing, dark, disturbing film. Everything is all wrong about this movie - from the rain that doesn't seem to stop, to the uncomfortable pauses in conversation, to the bleary rooms and buildings that the majority of the film takes place in, to the lighting, to the horrifying ending. Incredible acting combined with a dark twisted plot and a very un-Hollywood ending make this one of my favorites in this genre. This movie is worth the price of a rental just to hear Kevin Spacey's chilling monologue towards the end of the movie. A great, creepy flick.
Wiggum 11/16/2000
With an acting line-up that includes Morgan Freeman, Brad Pitt, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Kevin Spacey, "Seven" was bound (no pun intended) to be a good movie. But if you're looking for a feel-good action flick, you should definitely look elsewhere. "Seven" is dark and disturbing from start to finish. I don't want to give anything away if you haven't already seen it, but let me just say that this movie does not conform to traditional plot lines. This is NOT a good date movie. But if you're in the mood for a movie with great acting (especially from Kevin Spacey) and a dark story that will turn your stomach, "Seven" is a highly recommended rental.
michael_arbor 11/16/2000
Very good movie. Very disturbing movie. If you are one of those people that gets a little queasy when watching movies that have some gruesome scenes, be ready to cover your eyes for a couple of parts of 'Seven'. I think that Brad Pitt, Morgan Freeman and Kevin Spacey all did great jobs in the movie. The plot was not really intricate, but interesting enough to make you want to keep following the twists of the movie to see where it turns next.
