Avis Rent-A-Car 1

I rate Avis NO STARS!!! I couldn't post this review without one star.

I rented this summer from Avis in England. They scammed me! They gave us one price when we were in the U.S. We offered to pay in advance and they explained that is was not necessary. We flew all night to get to England. They took us in a bus about ten minutes from the airport and convinced us to sign a contract for another price explaining that we could work it out later. There is no working it out later! I called customer service and they verified I was overcharged but they said that they could not reimburse us the difference because it was Avis international. I also called my credit card company repeatedly and Avis fought our reimbursement.

We were overchaged an additional 50% on top of the price we were supposed to pay. I will never ever rent from this company again. They are not trustworthy!

I will not rent from AVIS again.

While on personal travel I rented and pre-paid for an AVIS sub-compact car. When I arrived at my destination, the rental agent told me that I was renting a compact car. Being tired, I didn't check that I was getting the car that I had paid for.

When I returned the car, the AVIS rental agent charged me extra for the compact car. I e-mailed AVIS customer relations about the extra charge and the ambush rental. Their stance is that I signed the contract and I owed them the money.

Avis Germany (Frankfurt) is scamming US renters at the price of $660 for a small cratch (under 1 inch) by just charging it to your credit card and producing phony estimates. Stay clear of them!!

Because of a mistake the agent on the phone made--they took my reservation, I was told that they'd take my debit card, but they wouldn't--I ended up driving 2.5 hours to the PWM Avis location only to be turned away.

Customer service was awful. Everybody admitted that I had a problem, nobody was willing/able to help. The manager at the stand said there was nothing she could do. The person at the other end of their customer help line told me "there was nothing anybody in the whole company could do. I could transfer you to the CEO right now and he couldn't help you."

I finally called back and got a sympathetic customer service guy, and the best he could do was tell me that somebody who had the power to help me would be getting back to me within 24 hours.

So my vacation is ruined because of a mistake *they* made. I drove 5 hours for nothing, I don't have the van I was planning on, and I apparently have no recourse.

None of the people I talked to had the ability/willingness to help when things went wrong. The single most frustrating customer service experience of my life. If you pick Avis, pray that everything goes exactly as planned because apparently "nobody in the company" can help you if it doesn't.

Extremely poor customer service!!! I recently made and confirmed a reservation using my entertainment book coupon. When I arrived at the pick-up location after walking .75 miles, I was informed that I could not rent a car due to a credit issue. Although I had efficient funds in my bank account for which I was using my debit card they refused to rent a car for me. At no point prior to pick-up was I notified that the rental would be contingent on a credit check. Although inconvenient, the situation actually worked to my advantage because I went across the street and rented a car from Budget rental for less money.

DO NOT RENT FROM EVER!!!!!!!!!! such a rip off. AVIS SCAMS THEIR CUSTOMERS!!!!!

i would just like to comment on my rental experience out of JFK international airport. i arrived in new york off a flight from dublin. i had to get to pennsylvania that night to visit a very sick relative of mine. it was all last minute so of course i didn't have time to make a proper reservation. i've rented with avis before and it's ALWAYS been a great experience. when i was sorting out a car with the representative he assigned me a death trap (kia rio) and then proceeds to charge me $120.99 a day. the best rate they had, he claimed. waaaaaay overpriced if you ask me but again, i was in a hurry to get to PA, i agreed and was on my way. on my way back from central PA i gave plenty of time in order to return the car. i hit traffic right after exiting I-80 onto I-287. what should have been a 1.5 hour car trip took me 5 hours. anyone who is in traffic for that long can understand my frustration. i knew i couldn't make it back to JFK in time so a closer option was nanuet, ny. when i dropped the car off i explained my situation and even though i was 3 hours late returning the car i was charged for a whole day. another $120.99!! this is ridiculous to me. it's a kia rio!! i feel completely scammed and i'm soooo disappointed in avis. i called customer service to inquire about my issue the refund was not approved. the second time i called to inquire they said i would be credited with half a day. i appreciate that but i was still charged for the other half of the day i wasn't driving the car. if i would have known this to be the outcome i would have kept the car for a half a day longer to get my money's worth. i will never use avis again. my father is a rewards member and has been for years and after this disaster he has vowed never to use avis again as well. i am extremely disappointed with my experience and especially coming from one of the most traveled through airports in the world. i know you have the right to raise your rates but to charge that much for a bottom line car is ridiculous. i will be sure to share my experience on every car rental review website so this never happens to anyone else.

Avis Rent-A-Car 1

A WARNING - DO NOT USE AVIS Car rentals

Recently I rented a car from AVIS and on returning from my vacation found
that they had charged me an extra 135 EURO.

The people at the AVIS counter blatantly LIED to me I was told that a charge
was there FOR ADMINISTRATION purposes ONLY in the case of an accident -

No accident occurred and later I was told, NO that charge was for insurance.

I had already paid insurance when ordering the car - resulting in being
charged TWICE for insurance and NO ACCIDENTS occurred.

They then proceed to charge me for bringing the car back late - ANOTHER
LIE as they claim the car was taken out just minutes after my plane landed
- (They also showed NO proof of my signature on the document with the time
they claim I took the car).

Further to that they informed me I had a grace period of 59 minutes from the
time I could bring the car back and would still not be charged another LIE.

I brought the car back ON TIME and in the EXACT SAME CONDITION as I took it
out, abiding by everything that I was TOLD and then I was still charged this
extra 135 EURO.

Worst part of all NO RESPONSE from AVIS.

Never ever rent a car from Avis. I am not the review type of person. I don't like to complain. But I have to say something about this company.

I call to rent a car from Avis. I do not get to select my car. I make a reservation anyway. No big deal.

I arrive at the Avis counter, they do not have a car for me. My friend has to drive me 35 miles to another Avis retal center. They offer me a day for free, I take it. That was nice.

The car was ok, not what I wanted but no big deal.

On the way to return the rental car I stop at a gas staion 1.5 miles from the drop off location to top off the tank.

ONE MONTH LATER. I get my credit card bill and I have 2 non approved charges from Avis on my bill.

First charge is for an automatic toll booth from a state I have never been to. I call costumer service, the lady is rude to me, redirects me to someone who takes my phone number. I get a call 5 hours later and they know they have made a mistake and remove the charge from my bill.

Second charge is $23.55 for gas. I have to call a different costumer service rep. and they tell me my tank was 1.6 gallons shy of a full tank. He tells me they charge $7.99 per gallon. Well first of all I topped that tank 1.5 miles from the drop off location. Second how does 1.6 gallons times $7.99 per gallon equal $23.55.

Avis is RIPPING people off. If they pad this kind of charge to every person, every day who rents from Avis this is a HUGE SCAM.

Please don't rent from Avis

Rented from Palma airport, Majorca.

We thought Avis were okay until we returned the car. The last day of our holiday we found that someone had stolen the glass from one of the wing mirrors, there was no other damage at all. Despite the terms saying 'negligent action' and we couldn't see how someone taking the glass from the car when it was parked out side the hotel was our fault, we had to pay 130 euro.

It wasn't even so much the amount - which does seem expensive for a piece of glass - it was the attitude of the staff. They just printed out a reciept for us to sign without even explaining the charge, they were rude, wouldn't listen to what we were saying and at one point just turned away from us to talk among themselves. One man even snatched the receipt off me and shouted in my face. When I went to the desk to complain the woman just shrugged at me. There were lots of other customers there also getting frustrated with the rudeness of the staff.

A very unfortunate end to what was a lovely holiday - don't rent with them, they don't care one bit about customer service.

I rented an avis car from the Hilton in Glendale CA (close to LA), I was driving it to Las Vegas one way. The lady at the counter was very rude and not professional at all. Because I had a Canadian license she didn't know how to handle it, she kept having to call someone for help. I was finally input into the system OK. However, she was unable to input my sister as a second driver (also with a Canadian license), I ended up being the only one allowed to drive on a 4-5 hour drive. This woman didn't know what she was doing.

Anyway, we get down to the dark underground parking garage where our car is. On first glance it look alright, but it was hard to tell in the poor lighting. But inside the car, it hadn't been cleaned out as there was still garbage from the previous renter. It's not until I'm already on the highway when I notice that the gas was only three quarters full! This car hadn't even been looked at since the previous renter! Not to mention the car obviously was in a previous accident as the rear bumper was coming off and the side mirror was coming off too. We got there OK though.

I would never trust my life to an avis car again... I guess I now know why they're so cheap!

Avis violated the Fair Credit Act by doing a credit check on me without any prior notice or consent, while I was attempting to pickup a car that I made reservations for through Priceline.com. I was told by the Avis counter agent that they could not rent me a car at all, because of my poor credit. The agent explained to me that if they could rent me a car, there would be a "drop fee" of $400.00 to pickup the car in Las Vegas (rental location) and then return the car at LAX Airport(Los Angeles). The credit check and the drop fee were never listed on Priceline.com, nor was it mentioned to me when I called Avis to confirm the reservation that I made on Priceline.com. I contacted the FTC (Federal Trade Commission) and filed a complaint against Avis. The FTC explained that they would only formally investigate if they had received many complaints about the same company regarding similar situations. Even though the FTC agreed that the Fair Credit Act had been violated, and deceptive business practices had been demostrated by Avis and Priceline.com they cannot do anything at this point in time. In my opinion, the FTC is just another useless government agency that only exists because of taxpayers money. If the FTC would get of their lazy taxpayer funded asses and properly investigate the (similar situations) on websites like this one and many similar websites, they would realize that there are many similar consumer related issues, like Avis's deceptive business practices. Hopefully more people will contact the FTC about their situations. Anyone that needs the information on the FTC ( http://www.ftc.gov/ )

100 miles away from Slat Lake City, where we rented the car we had a blow-out. We called the supposed 24/7 roadside assistance line on Avis' agreement folder. They did not have anyone that could come out to assist us. They suggested that we could drive on the donut for 3000 miles. On 80 mph speed limit roads that was not an option. The next suggestion was that they provide info on the nearest place we could get a new tire. The place they sent us to was 50 miles away and when we got to the address found that it hadn't been Big O Tires for 2 or 3 years. We were lucky. There were 2 other dealers in town and 1 had tires that would work. I say "tires" because when the mechanic put the car on the lift both tires had the steel belts showing. This car hadn't been gone over in quite some time. Because Avis would not give the shop a credit card to bill it to I had to pay for the $662 job myself. I was told by a manager named Drew that the amount would be subtracted from my car rental and the difference would be sent to me by check. During the remainder of our trip the check engine light kept coming on. We called the service manager in Sat Lake to find out that Avis only checks their cars every 7000 miles. That's scary. This man, Tony, told us that he'd take care of us. I guess that means nothing because upon returning the car the only thing we got was a bill for the rental and a promise that I'd be reimbursed for the tires and that Tony would probably comp the car for our inconvenience. Never heard from Tony. I called Avis costumer relations and was told that a check was cut for the tires and that they could offer me $85 in vouchers for future rentals. What a joke! As if I'd trust my life to an Avis car again. I think not. I asked for a manager and spoke with Dennis in Salt Lake who promised a 1/2 refund on the car. It has been 48 hours and still no refund on my card. Called Travelocity who claims to make things right, right away. Ha! Same BS. I wait... no check...no refund. DON'T DO IT! DON'T RENT FROM AVIS!

If you had negative stars I would choose that...To keep it short, my family went to florida on spring break. Rented from AVIS, didn't get the car we rented and had to rent a step up costing $100 more. Upon our return was charged $140 for having sand in the car. We went to the beach twice and each time showered our feet before getting back into the car...bottom line don't rent AVIS CARS. EVER.

I just hab a terrible experience from Avis in Orlando, their customer service is a joke and is no help at all, they can't authorize any credit and won't let you talk to anyone who can.
I had a confirmed rate for a rental on a multiple week rental but was forced to return it a couple of days early due to a family emergency, by doing this I found out that I voided the rate and they can charge any new rate they want, which resulted in $500 additional charges. I did not want any special treatment or expect a reduced charge for a shorter rental, I just wanted to pay the charge I was quoted, Avis just wanted to find a reason to charge more.

But when I checked my credit car they totally charged me $703.16, average$175.79 per day for a compact car!!! when I called them, they said I signed the document, sorry for misunderstanding! Extremely bad!!!

I had a terrible experience with Avis and 3 weeks after I sent 2 emails (my complaint attached after Avis's reply) via their customer service website, I finally got a very rude reply from their customer service department. Based on their reply, Avis is not responsible for anything. It's all customer's fault (" lack of planning, organization, or responsibility on
your part") and they are clueless about what is going on in all the locations.

I am not sure how a company like Avis can survive in the US market? I wonder how much the executives are paid in Avis for the terrible management capability?

1) Reply from Avis:

Thank you for contacting us through the Avis Website. Please accept my
sincere apology for the delay in responding to your inquiry.

A surprising number of people leave items behind in their rush to catch
a plane or to reach their final destination. Avis rental locations are
quite proud of their success rate in locating these articles and
returning them to their owners. Occasionally, however, some items
thought to have been left in a rental car simply cannot be accounted for
despite the location?s best efforts.

As indicated on your contract, 637425644, Avis is not responsible for
any loss or damage to personal property left or carried in a rental
vehicle, therefore lack of planning, organization, or responsibility on
your part does constitute as criminal activity on ours. We can only
suggest that you contact your insurance agent, to determine whether you
have coverage for this loss.

In regards to the manager's actions and the vehicle being rented out, I
unfortunately do not have access to that information; hence I can not
provide an answer on this. As far as the vehicle being moved and unable
to be located, this can be easily explained. As you are aware Avis and
Budget are sister companies, and at a lot of location will need to share
the fleet that is available. With this in mind there is a large
possibility that when the vehicle was returned and you were on your way
that either an Avis or Budget agent could have taken the vehicle for the
intended maintenance right away. As far as the vehicle being rented
while on 'HOLD' again I do not have access to this information and would
be something that only the manager of the Los Angeles Intl Airport
location.

If you have any further questions, please let us know.

2) My complaint:

I returned the car around 11:00 AM on 1/30/09. About 5 minutes after I
left the car, I realized that I left a white plastic shopping bag in the back
seat of the car. Inside of the bag, I have a video camera, a cosmetic box, a
headset and some newspapers.
> When I returned to where I left the car (about 5 minutes later), the car
was gone. So I went to talk to the agent who checked me in. His name is
Carlos. He was very helpful and immediately walked around the lot and looking
for that car for me. He was very surprised that he couldn't find the car.
He told his Supervisor, Kevin who was helpful too. He sent three guys to walk
around (check on the cleaning, service area, etc). He then checked the computer
and told me that this car (to my surprise) was on a re-call list and
needs
service right away before they can rent it out again. So he assured me that the
car must be in the service department. He also told me that he will put a
"HOLD" on this car so no one can rent it.
>
> After one hour waiting, no one could locate the car. It was like the car
just disappeared from Avis's lot that no one even knew about who took it.
Kevin then told me because it was Friday and other locations were short of cars,
they might have come in and drove off to their place (like Orange co, etc) but
he told me that since he already put a HOLD on the car. Someone will find the
car and report to him right away. He couldn't really explain why the car
could got out Avis's lot without any records of it.
>
> I waited for another hour, Carlo went to look for the car for me again
after his lunch break, but he found nothing. By then I had to leave for my
flight. Before I left, I reported
this to the manager, (Kevin already gone for
the day), Bruce, who asked the lost-found person, Abram, took down my
information and told me that they will call me as soon as the car show up in
their records.
>
> I called Abram at the lost and found everyday but nothing showed up in the
system and no one returned my bag to the lost and found yet. On 2-4-09, when I
called again, I was told that Abram was laid off. I then asked to speak to
Bruce, the location manager. After several messages, Bruce finally returned my
call. He said he remembered my case, then pulled out the records and said
'the car was rented out again on 2-2-09 from Budget, next door to
Avis". I asked him:
> 1) How can this car be rented so quickly, it was on a re-call list and
needed service? His answer: I guess the service was done. "
> How can this be possible? It was done so quickly over the weekend???
>
>
2) I thought the car was put on "HOLD" by Kevin that no one can
rent it out.
> His answer: I guess whoever got the car just ignored the message.
>
> I then asked him, Bruce, to call the budget for me and see if, by any
chance, someone has turned in my bag to their lost and found. He said he will
and he will give me a call later.
> Then I never heard from Bruce. I have been calling him and left him
several messages since then but he never returned my call.
>
> I finally decided to call Budget- LAX myself on 2-19-09 (ph:
310-642-4502) and they don't have my bag either.
>
> I would like to get an explanation from your company that:
> 1) How can a car disappear from Avis car 5 minutes after being returned
(there were at least 10 cars in front of my car, my car was not even the first
in line) and no one knew who took it?
>
> 2) How can a car that needs service
being rented to me in San Louis Obispo
and then again in LAX without being properly serviced?
>
> 3) How can a car that was on a "Hold" list can be rented?
> 4) Why the manager not returning my calls to apologize or let me know the
status of my search?
>
> Thank you.
>
> A very disappointed customer.

Avis Rent-A-Car 4

We all know that these rent-a-car companies depend on loyal and new customers for business...This we all know. There are GREAT examples of customers at our AVIS location.
I love customers...but it can't be that simple!

Too many times customers e-mail bad letters and jeopardize a persons job. Thats taking things waaay out of bounds. Bad service happens but....

Its not always the service persons fault. Courtesy drivers take a beating for NO reason.

The trouble that I see is the hostility of the "Avis Preferred" Customer...It gives all 'regular joe' customers a bad name. The typical Avis preferred customer is.... White Male, bald or balding, not limited to black male and balding also. Typically unfunny and BORING also.
Likes also to sit directly in front seat next to driver...making driver very uncomfortable.
Why not let the ladies sit in front guys? come on?

Generally though, these are the problem categories?

#1 Rude. Coming off fresh from the plane ride, they're grumpy about being late and generally pissed about having to carry their luggage they brought along themselves. They take hostility out on the courtesy bus driver who is only trying to load bags on the bus and process other preferred members who may be trying to load on bus.

If you are a preferred member and know you are please specify that you are. Don't just sit there and expect the driver to read your mind. The computer won't automatically work itself.
This especially holds true if you have done the preferred more than once...You know the drill. Don't be such a self absorbed asshole about it. Put down the cell phone for a sec.

#2 RUDER. If you screwed up your reservation or your travel agent screwed it up its not the fault of anyone but you. If your credit card is declined its not a reason to question the shuttle driver or ask him whats going on. I didnt make the reservation- you did!

#3 CHEAP...We all work for tips and don't demand much. If everyone chipped in a dollar or two for us loading the bags onto the shuttle and sometimes into the car upon arrival it would be great. Don't act like you don't know the deal. Dont leave a guy twisting in the wind waiting for a tip. Even if its 50 cents of dimes and nickels its appreciated. We will rember you next time also. Another thing is having to pick up 3 child seats, strollers, playpens 5 little bags and 6 huge 50 pounders. Thats fine and dandy but how about a tip?
Dont leave me hanging. You know who you are. A handshake wont do! A smile from your wife definently wont do!

P.S. Your kids loving and appreciating the ride doesn't elicit a smile. They didn't tip me either!

#4 UNGRATEFUL. So many times the 'Preferred' drop off is executed beautifully with one exception....a picky and ungrateful customer who thinks its beneath them to drive a Chevy Cobalt or PT Cruiser because its ugly or the wrong color. Why be so shallow? Then to make matters worse blame the driver who dropped you off.... Know what? I don't wan't to hear about your hatred for the color yellow ok? Its not my call. YOU made the reservation. Is it so bad to drive an HHR? Did I choose it for you? Why rage against me?

I wish every car was a red Cadillac DTS or CTS then what would be there to complain about?

#5 INSENSITIVE. The shuttle has to wait a certain amount of time. Don't get mad if we have to pick up more customers or wait on a few more.
Don't be mad about the rain-fall or the hot weather either. Why are you packing golf clubs if its so hot? The weather is not my call but I will give you a nice cool day for tomorrow to make you feel better mmkay? Since i'm the damn weather man! How about use your I-phone?

#6 CLUELESS. You are too cheap to rent a GPS and didn't pack a road atlas....You want directions to your 5 star hotel and worksite from the shuttle driver who suggests a Garmin GPS unit that you are again too cheap to buy. Driver does give you clues on how to get you to the interstate and on to backwater USA....For no tip I might add. No tip. It never fails.

That fancy restaurant you at at in 1983???? The hole in the wall strip club???

Guess what? I never been to it. I don't know where it is. You don't know..why should I know?

I also don't know the way to your grannies house in Mississippi either!!!! DAMN!

These are just some of the reasons why its not always the fault of AVIS. You can say all the bad things you want but the ball is in your court also customer.

Have a lovely day!

Avis Rent-A-Car 1

Avis is a crazy mess of a company. I am unfortunately an AVIS first member which is their elite status only given to members renting very frequently from them. I consistently receive free weekends from them for renting frequently. I dont have the problems with rentals as such, generally they are very efficient in processing the return of the car. However, there customer service and billing are the most unfriendly I have ever seen. I completed terms for a free weekend and they sent me a coupon two weeks after that, however, I had to take a rental in between for a weekend. I called their customer service which advised me to rent the car and do a retro adjustment when I receive the coupon.

Then I did the same and called customer service which always has at least half an hour of wait time on phone (their manager probably sleeps in the day since he is never reachable!). The customer service rep started picking the fine print one after the other and starting testing my patience. He converted my rental to one-way to make me ineligible for the coupon although the locations were in the same town and was pre-authorised by AVIS.

Gist of the story - Stay away from AVIS customer service! They hire a number of low wage workers who are not paid enough to act in proper manners with you. It seems that there is a "being cocky with the customers" competition held at AVIS customer service each day and there seriously compete in it.
I rate them absolute worst of the customer service experience across the industries.

New Jersey Limo Companies Cry Foul Over New Avis' Service
Thursday, September 27 2007 @ 11:05 AM Central Daylight Time

A new service by Avis Budget Group Inc. is raising eyebrows among the New Jersey limousine industry circles.

The dispute revolves around Avis Chauffeur Drive, a program that Parsippany-based Avis started in June and offers in New Jersey and nine other metropolitan areas. Avis contracts with WeDriveU, a San Mateo, Calif.-based company that doesn't have its own fleet of vehicles. Instead, WeDriveU provides chauffeurs, who drive customers in the customers' own cars.

The new service by Avis offers customers a chauffeur with their rental car seems perfectly tailored for on-the-run executives. It means an executive who lands at Newark Liberty International Airport for a day of meetings in New York doesn't have to worry about hailing cabs, finding parking or footing a huge bill for a town car.

The New Jersey limousine industry is crying foul , and says Avis gets an unfair competitive advantage by sidestepping regulations that tightly control its companies. "They're trying to get around all the bureaucratic things necessary to operate a for-profit transportation company," said Gary Kramer, owner of Impress Limousine, a Shrewsbury company that owns five vehicles.

The local limo industry is asking the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission to further analyze the Avis program to ensure that it complies with state law. However, executives involved with the service said the rules aren't that simple because Avis technically is not a limousine company.

In the Avis service, a customer would rent a car from Avis and then pay another $34.50 an hour, for a minimum of three hours for a WeDriveU chauffeur. However, the limousine industry is crying foul, because Avis and WeDriveU offer the same service as limousine companies but don't face the litany of regulations that people in the industry say are in place to ensure customer safety.

Avis Rent-A-Car 1

horrible experience, I will never ever rent a car from here again.  I made a reservation over the phone.  I stated I was under 25, I was then told if I had triple A they can wave the extra charge and the total would come to $181.  As I got off the plane to pickup my car, I waited in line for close to an hour while other ahead of me in line consistantly had problems.  Finally got to the counter, the lady seemed completly useless told me I was good to go.  Printed out the total which came to $350.  Then claimed I was never promised that amount and there are no discounts.  After speaking to a manager, I gave up. Then went over to enterprise was helped immediatly with a very nice worker and was given a rate of $210 and I was finally on my way.

Enterprise employees were so much more helpful than Avis.

These people are highly irresponsible and unprofessionals. They do registration but last moment say that they dont have vehicle. Ours was terrible experience with AVIS. We had reverved a 7 seater by calling them and we gave them our debit card for booking and they accepted it. We reached Newport to receive the car but were asked to provide credit card. When we gave them our credit card they asked for the licence of the same person having credit card, which unfortunately we were not having. They said its their rule. If it was a rule then they should have told us before. One of our guy who was on the way was having driving license and credit card both and then we asked them will our registration hold good for some time as that guy is on the way. On that they agreed that time. Our friend reached there and when we approached them again they said they dont have car. On asking what is the meaning of registration, they said I dont know. I request everybody to not to go for AVIS. Never........

I recently rented a car from Avis New York. The car was ok but they charged me for 3 days for a 2day and 2 hours rental. All the additional charges for the extra 1 day amounted to more that $150.00. When I called and complained about it, they said that 2 hours is the same as 24 hours. I was more than schocked. How can we compare 2 hours and 24 hours? They lie to their customers because when u want to make a reservation, they give you a quote for x days and x hours. I asked about grace peiods and they said they have a 29mn grace period! 29 minutes! That is BS and I know that I will NEVER, NEVER rent from Avis again

Avis Rent-A-Car 1

I rented a nice car from Avis in Liverpool, England in June 2008. We had no problem with the rental. However, some two months later I received a letter from Avis that they had charged my credit card approx 60 US dollars for admin fees. I sent about five emails and two letters before anyone replied.
It seems I received a photo traffic ticket somewhere between Liverpool and London and they charged ME 60 Dollars to provide my name and address to the British authorities. 60 Dollars for 2 minutes of work??? When I protested, I got the standard reply from Avis, that they had to work hard to provide that information to the police.
And the amusing part (if there is one) is that I have never received the ticket from UK and it have been over three months.

Three years after renting a car from this company they had a collection agent call me and tell me I owed $600 for damages. I did not damage the car and no one ever tried to contract me prior to the call form the collection agency. When I contacted Alamo they told me to jump in a creek.

Avis Rent-A-Car 1

Recently visited Atlanta making rental car reservations with Avis for a 3 day compact car rental, estimated at $156. Upon arrival I was given an unrequested, what they considered a "full size" car, an Eclipse. I opted for the collision insurance and was given a 3 day rental estimate of $279. My reason for visiting Atlanta changed and I had to depart returning the car to Avis in less than 24 hours. I was given a bill for those 22 hours of $185.87. When I later complained to Avis they reduced the charge $64. and told me that I had been given a bigger car than I requested. At the time when I told the attendant at the car turn in that I didn't appreciate the car change she took a defensive attitude about it. That's the last Avis for me. Borderline dishonest.

Avis Rent-A-Car 2

I just recently rented a car from Avis on Wednesday July 2nd 2008. This location was in 4904 N. Van Nuys Blvd., Sherman Oaks, CA 91403 , U S A
818-382-7755. The agents name was Ron. (seemed to be from a middle eastern descent)

And my.....what a bad experience. Well. my situation starts when I needed a small car to get around for that day. The only reason why I gave two stars is because there were a couple of things that I appreciated. But I'll get to that later. So I got picked up by Ron at 10:00 am (+). And we arrived at the Avis location in about 10 to fifteen minutes. After about fifteen more minutes of processing I ended up renting a silver KIA RIO. So after I finish the paper work I walk to the rental to drive away and I notice that we didn't do a check on the ca so I turn around to Ron and mention it to him. And "bamm" we find about 4 future questionable scratches that would have haunted me. After filling out the paper for the scratches I finally drive off at approximately 10:30 - 10:35. As I went back home in the normal 98 degree L.A. heat I notice the air conditioning is not working properly but I never bothered to mention because I was stressed for time and I was willing to give it a little more EXTRA time to kick in (which it never did). So the next day I wake up at 10:30 am to start my day and decided to extended my rental. But very shortly after something came up to were I didn't need the car as originally planned. So I immediately called back to make the change. Mr. Ron didn't like that. At this time it was 10:45ish. He repeatedly said, "Oh I can't do that, I already put the order in" Then he said in a very agitated and rude way, "I cannot open your contract unless your here". So since I'm only ten to fifteen minutes away I told him I was on my way so that I would not have to pay for the day. So buying me fifteen minutes its now 11:00. (this was soon his favorite phrase "11:00, 11:00") So when I show up to drop the car off his demeaner was very rude, non chalant, and just plain careless. Then he said very shortly "its now 11:00 you rented the car at 10:00, your late and you have to pay for the car for the full day". At that time I was super mad but I said nothing. I just said "ok" and began to asked him could I turn it in Friday which was the Fourth of July. He said yes and that he would be in the office at 9:00. I said from nine to when? he gave me a unsecure answer like around ten. So the next day I call him at 10:05 five. I said "Ron, are you still there?" He said "yes" very rudely. I said sorry I'm late can I still come up. He gave me the ok so I showed up. No one was there so I called Ron again. When he pulled up after leaving me cause he said that I was late. He got out of the car and immediately said "YOUR KILLING ME MAN" What a rude remark . Needless to say that I was billed an extra fifteen daollars for a quarter of a gallon of gas short. This was just a bad experience for me and I did not appreciate the rude and tackless service from RON. And I wish that someone from Avis's department fixes his attitude.

I do appreciate him helping me on a closed day. Thats the only reason why I gave two stars instead of the mostly deserved one star.

Avis Rent-A-Car 1

I recently (April 17, 2008) rented the car @ Hobby Airport in Houston, TX for more than a month and when I signed the contract I was not sure about the return date, but I knew it will be more than a month. So, the lady in the counter said it should not be a problem if I decided to keep it longer than a month and all I needed to do was give them a call and let them know when I will intend to return the car. When I asked about what the price will be for the car after a month, since I was getting the monthly rate (which is cheaper than weekly or daily), she told me they will divide the monthly rate by 30 and just multiply by the number of days exceeding the month. I was OK with that as it was a good deal...

After a month, I called them and told them that I will be keeping the car until June 4, 2008. The person on the phone, told me that it is fine and thanks for calling and letting them know.

I decided to return the car @ different location, but with in the same city limit (as their is no additional charge for that), the person on the counter told me that their computers are down and will not be able to print the receipt at that time and I have to pick-it-up later. I was fine with that as I had to go somewhere and the location was close to my residence. Since, it was a weekdayI could not go back to that location until friday afternoon (as they close @ 6 PM). When I saw the receipt, I was shocked to see the huge bill and rates were entirely different than what I was told. I asked the manager their to sort the things out, but he bailed out of it say it was not the location where I rented the car. So, I went back to the Hobby Airport location and asked the person their. She told me she could not do much as it was more than two days and they cannot change anything. She also mentioned that the Manager was out on some emergency, but asked me to call the customer care people to sort things out.

When I called the customer service, they told me that they cannot do anything as it is in the hand of the Hobby Airport Location Manager and she rudely hang up on me, when I was trying to convince her about the situation. I later called the location manager and he told me that he cannot help as it more than two days and only customer service can help and when I told him about what happened with the customer service, he told me then it is out of his control also as the main office has customer service could not help me.

All together to sum up the entire experience, I will never rent a car from Avis, if it means I have to walk 100 miles or stay overnight at location for car to be available at another rental company. I HATE AVIS...

Rented a Kia hatchback from Avis during a recent trip to San Juan, PR. The car was very clean and fuel efficient. The customer service was expedient and efficient, and they even gave us directions to the hotel.

Avis Rent-A-Car 5

So far I have rented Avis Rent a Car 3 times each year since 2005 in LAX airport and doing great. This year was quick first in line at the counter after entering the kiosk and took less than 4 minutes to complete the process, booked us a Chevolet Impala with full tank, took us only short walk to get to my car, and the car was in a clean and good condition, but compared to the first time rented in 2005, reserved a full size car the same way that year but double upgraded to a luxury car in a Cadillac with no charge since they were out of full size and premium cars (just a note that luxury cars does hog gas to refill about every 200-250 miles in a tank). About the rental car coverage is not needed if you have insurance to cover a rental car. For a notice I did not take the coverage and  have not encontered an accident yet and Los Angeles is one of the bad drivers and high rate of accidents. The Bus service is ok, and return service was good. Avis so far is my best rental car company close to hertz.

And sometimes if it is so expensive as $300 a week or more than $40 a day , consider using Hotwire.com deep discount rate (and it only works returning the same place and it is not refundable or changeable unless noted) and you will get those trusted brands like avis, hertz, national, budget, and alamo for maybe as low as $15 a day for midsize (and it will be random between these 5 rental companies and will only be shown after you book). Worth the a little more money for trusted brands than dollar, thrifty, or fox rent a car. For my first time using hotwire in 2007 for full size for $25 a day got me hooked up with Avis on luck.

I won't speak for International, but Toronto Pearson Avis rocks.  If you don't like the car, they will find you one that you like.  They are the absolute quickest of all of them even if there is a line up waiting to drop cars off.

DON'T RENT FROM AVIS IN EUROPE. They try harder to scam you! Currently in a fight with Avis over CDW fees they charged. I did not want it or sign for it, yet they are charging me more than the rental cost. Tried to get straightened out in Europe.... NO. Tried to get straightened out in US... NO. Bad customer service, unethical business practices. WILL NEVER USE AVIS AGAIN.

We rented from AVIS in Norway. Six months after paying the rental fee,we got an additional charge on our credit card. After a number of telephone calls, we were informed that the extra charges were for supposedly failing to pay a toll fee plus Avis added an additional "administrative" fee of over $60. We had receipts for all the tolls we paid and asked AVIS for proof of our infraction. We were informed that we had ignored their prior request for the toll infraction fee therefore their extra "Admministrative" fee was added to our credit card without our knowledge. We never received a notice of such from AVIS until our credit card was billed six months later. A registered letter was sent to AVIS' Overseas Vice President explaining our position. No response was ever received from AVIS. "We try harder" I think not.

Avis Rent-A-Car 1

Lets see... Avis...? Ohhh yeah! I rent twice a year and drive back home to visit family in Cali. Last X-mas rented with Avis, and it was actually cheaper than most places for me. I picked the car I liked, and that was the car I got. Enterprise had quoted me $300 for the weekend and two weekdays, and no guartantee which type of vehicle I would get. Avis gave me all costs upfront, except for the underage renter cost,,,,,,twelve bucks a day, I think. The best part about Avis was when I left the rental location at a local Casino, to pick up my sister just 10 miles away I got into an accident. Now mind you I was in a brand new Monte Carlo, but I was hit by a woman in a Mercedes, who happened to run a red light when I was crossing the intersection. She ran right into the front end passenger side of the bumper. Didn't look like too much damage, and the woman who hit me admitted fault, and had full coverage for her car. Turns out, Avis wanted me to cover the costs, as well as her insurance. #*#*#*#*#*#* Apprently if you rent a car and get into an accident, the driver is liable for any and all damages done, regardless of insurance involvment. *#*#*#*#*#*#*

Rented a car at LAX - shuttle pick-up was very fast, line at counter went quickly, spouse was included free as additional driver, and they brought the car to me instead of making me lug my belongings and two children to the car! Price was only $10 more than company we used two years ago that I would rate a 2. Excellent customer service from each person we encountered. Will use them next time I travel.

I usually always rent from AVIS, especially when I go down to Florida to visit family. Avis is a little more expensive most of the time, but the time you save not waiting in line at the counter and walking straight to your car at the airport seems worth the extra money. Also, the times that I have returned the car, it is so organized, especially in Tampa and Orlando.... you follow the signs into the Avis area in the airport garage, the attendants check your car in as you are getting out. It honestly takes about 5 minutes... Once I even left some keys in the car and they fed-exed them back to me in New York the next day. I haven't had any problems with extra charges... JUST FYI, you normally don't need any extra insurance... if you have car insurance on a personal car, it sometimes covers a rental car, ALSO your credit card company automatically (most of the time) covers rental car insurance...

Avis Rent-A-Car 3

I've had very mixed experiences; over 3 years I rentered from them in the UK about 20 times. The price they quote sounds good but then they charge extra for picking it up at an airport, numerous insurances (sure they are optional but do you want to get hit for two hundred pounds until you are proved not at fault?), and now the ultimate insult extra for road tax - which I think should be included as in the UK it is illegal to have a car on the road without it! It's like charging extra for legal tyres and working headlights! Once there was damage to the car which was not noted and I didn't see as it was midnight, dark and raining. I had to pay the excess for the damage! Two more times after that I noticed damage which was not logged. I've had to call their customer relations people several times, they are very hard to get through to, and I have written twice: once I got a standard form reply which didn't address the points I raised, the second time no reply at all. On the other hand their office is bright, some of the people are helpful (or at least try sometimes) amd their desk at Terminal 4 is usually staffed.

Avis is so easy to do business with. I've used them four times while making trips back to N.D. The reservation process, pick-up and drop-off were all extremely easy. They're also the cheapest out of all the rental car companies I checked with. At one point I needed to add a driver to be covered under the rental agreement, I called and they did this in about two minutes, with no hassles. The workers are also very friendly. They helped me install my car seat for my infant and put my luggage in the car. I'll definitley use them in the future!

These S.O.B went back and charged me for a dent that was on the car that I rented. However, it was there at the time of rental. Not to mention, it was the second car I got from them that day, because the first one hadn't had an oil change in 10,000 miles and the engine locked down. The second car (dented) only had 3/4 of a tank. Then I drop the keys in the drop box, and they bill me for an extra day after I correctly note the odometer reading and fuel level. Avis - They try harder? Yeah, to rip you in the (*) harder!!!

Sometimes it's worth it to go with the best. I recently booked a trip to LA through LowestFare.com. After a made my flight reservation, I checked into getting a rental car through the service. Lowestfare gave me a number of options including a company called "RentRite" which was by far the cheapest, and which I ended up selecting. When I arrived in LA, I waited for 30 minutes for a "RentRite" shuttle bus, to no avail. I called information who told me that no RentRite existed in LA. I ended up getting on an air-conditioned Avis bus, which were passing every 3 minutes or so, and renting an Avis Car. While the rates were more than a little more expensive, everything about their service screamed "WE ARE A PROFESSIONAL ORGANIZATION AND TAKE PRIDE IN OUR JOB." My car was new and clean, the agents were polite and professional, and the overall experience was very positive. Never again will I choose "Rent Rite."
