 | Robert57 (1) 05/06/2008 | Reserved truck and car trailer weeks in advance. When I arrived, they had neither. Made me drive across town to one dealership for the truck, to another for the trailer. Truck had a flat tire. The dealer inflated it and said I was good to go. I went to lunch for a hour. Tire lost 15 lbs. Drove to repair facility way on the other side of town, where wheel was replaced. Left town six hours behind schedule.
They don't only screw customers, they also screw themselves. I got my $75 deposit back three times. I actually made money on the move.
On another move, they closed the office while customers were standing in line. They said come back tomorrow.
Reservations mean nothing to U-Haul. It's first come, first served. Arrive when the office opens, avoid weekends, expect to lose half a day due to their errors.
I found it's cheaper to throw away furniture, ship clothes and small items via UPS in trunks weighing exactly 70 lbs. UPS costs $300; used furniture for an apartment is $1200 at Cort.

 | irishgit (153) 04/17/2007 | I've rented twice from these guys, once because I didn't know any better, and once because they were the only game in town.
I didn't have the reservation problems other reviewers mention but the vehicles themselves are negligently maintained to the point of being lethal.
Apparently the mechanics at Budget think brakes are a luxury option.

 | PSF11 (2) 04/17/2007 | "U-Wonder" is what comes to mind when asking why this company is still in business. On TWO completely separate and distinct moving dates, U-Haul failed to provide the trucks which we had reserved WEEKS in advance. These occasions were years apart and at separate rental centers. We stood in disbelief among packages piled to the ceiling, friends and family waiting to help us move. To add insult to injury, we had been warned by friends who had the same experience with these SOBs that they're known for this. (Why we went with them the second time-- okay, long story but-- shame on us.) In both cases our moves were saved by Ryder who had trucks standing by without reservations of any kind. The people at Ryder said they actually have trucks on standby during weekends for people who just got screwed by U-Haul!

 | jm03 (0) 10/18/2006 | The truck I rented shimmied all over the road, a warning light came on, and the muffler fell off! They would not even give me a replacement!

 | delawarebound (0) 05/31/2004 | You must go into a deal with U-haul knowing that everything is your responsibility to verify and resolve. U-Haul's service was terrible. We understood that our truck might not be where we ordered it 7 days in advance. They said they called to tell us it was at a different location, a lie. We got there close to quitting time and found out it was not there but 25 miles away. When we asked them to confirm the person would wait for us at the other location since it was almost 7 PM closing time, they would not. The young fellow at the counter seemed to care less about the issue, just telling me it my problem. If I ever need a truck again I will check out the competition and I will make sure I tell all to use U-haul at their own risk.

 | U-Haul (0) 04/28/2004 | Seattle U-haul on 15th Northwest did not have 12' trailer as arranged 5 days in advance.. refered us to a U-Haul facility 12 miles away (165th and Aurora). Tho the 165th and Aurora dealer had the requested trailer, their trailer's electrical connection did not work with our vehicle's factory supplied trailer connection so we opted to rent a a U-haul truck. Big mistake!!! Drove truck 12 miles back to loading site. Loaded truck. Engine failed to start. Unloaded truck and called 800 number for service (rental office does not service their trucks). Three hours later the truck is repaired (new starter motor). Too late to load and transfer materials so returned truck to U-haul dealer. We were charged for truck rental and mileage (at $1.00/mile) for a total cost of $80. U-Haul's unwrited policy is that they do not take responsiblity for the serviceability of their equipment. You rent it, you risk it. If it doesn't work its your problem, not theirs. This is blatant, intentional fraud!!!

 | leon_phelps (0) 06/04/2003 | I have been forced to deal with this rental nightmare more times than I care to remember due to their monopoly in many areas (where I always seem to be in need of a truck). There has not been a single instance where my truck was where it was supposed to be, my bill was correct on the first try, or I received anything resembling customer service. Save yourself the trouble; take all of your furniture to be moved, staple $100 bucks to the pile, torch it, and then just buy new stuff when you get wherever you are going. At least U-Haul won't get the satisfaction.

 | opinionated1 (0) 12/27/2002 | The worst ever! First, they did not honor my reservation, then after hours of trying to get a new truck which I had paid for in advance, truck broke down on highway, and u-haul had me pay out of pocket for repairs and tow!!!!! BEWARE OF THIS COMPANY. There are a lot of alternatives (Ryder, Penske, Budget).

 | onetimeonly (0) 11/23/2002 | Why can't you choose ZERO stars. U-Haul doesn't deserve one star even if it means "terrible," which you only know if you add a rating anyway.
TERRIBLE! I got home, had ordered half dozen furniture pads, discovered only four were enclosed. Had to go back next morning, 40 minute drive to get them.
Got charged A FULL EXTRA DAY rental when I brought truck back 20 minutes late. I said, "Fine, I'll keep it another day then."
He said, No, you can't keep it, I've already checked it in. I said, You can't charge me for an extra day and then say I can't use it an extra day -- that's blatantly illegal. He said he only does what U-Haul tells him and that he can't take the charge off for the extra day because the payment goes onto a national charge system and it automatically charges for the next day whether you bring it 20 minutes or 4 hours late.
So I was super ticked, but he gave me the national UHAUL phone number & said tell them, and they'll probably give me a refund for the extra day, but there was nothing he could do about it.
So I called the national number the next morning, and they tell me they can't do anything about it, that I need to talk to the local mover!!!!! After going around in circles with them & being given different numbers to call, I got no where. The last guy said he had no power to issue a refund, and I keep asking Who Does? but no one does or no one knows who does. He said all he's authorized to do is fill out a claim form and submit the information. I say, who do you submit it to, let me talk to them. But he can't tell me.
How much you bet no one will ever get back to me?
They are absolutely CROOKS. You cannot charge a person "for an extra day" and THEN TELL THEM THEY CAN"T HAVE THE TRUCK THE EXTRA DAY.
IDIOTS!

 | ChuckUFarley (0) 12/28/2001 | Never got a call back from anyone local, now I call, and they say the truck was overbooked, and then they change the story saying that the brakes went out on the truck. I told them I reviewed issues like this on a consumer website (This one) and that it might be hours until she gets back to me, and I wonder if the same would happen to me. She said she will do what she can.

 | BrewManChu (0) 02/27/2001 | Reserved a truck with a credit card. When I went to pick it up, they didn't have any trucks and there were 5 other irate customers with "confirmed" reservations also waiting...

 | nojjustin (0) 10/14/2000 | Don't let their psuedo-convenience fool you. During my first cross country move, the U-haul truck broke down three times! During the second move, we only had a few minor problems with the drive, but we experienced horrible customer service once we reached our destination. The one month free storage with a one way move was horrible. You can only reserve a spot 24 hours in advance, and the facilities are not inter-connected. We had to find phone numbers for about 15 different storage facilities before finding one with space available. Then they expected us to carry our couch and other furniture up a step ladder to the upper floor facility.

 | anne9353du (0) 08/04/2000 | The truck was clean, but the seats were smelly. I don't like the fact that the dolley is not included in the truck rental fee. The truck should include the dolley. The light in the back of the truck did not work, making it hard to unload at night.

 | Al-Davis-Lives! (0) 07/21/2000 | I had to rent a trailer recently and had a terrible experience with U-Haul. Trailers were in high demand and so I decided to make my reservation on the internet. Got the confirmation, they charged my credit card etc. then the next day I call the 800 number to get my pickup location and the guy tells me he's going to have the woman who runs that territory call me and tell me. 6 hours pass. I call back a woman says you're all set here's the number of your pick up location. I call it's not them, I call again not them again. I look up the name in the phone book it's diff. from the one give to me by U-Haul they say we stopped using U-haul months ago. So now I have no trailer. I call the 800 number again, she says oops and finds me a location 45 minutes away!!! and of course I have to go get it. Just to add to it I get there and I say I've never done this before what do I need? You're all set she says. Of course it ends up the adapter for the trailer lights isn't correct so I have to delay again and go buy one. U-Haul keeps America moving alright in circles.

 | alsu7146om (0) 06/28/2000 | My family has moved two times. The first time it was a complete "moving out" and the second was just helping my sister to move to her new apartment. Both times, renting a U-haul was very convenient. I like the deal price to rent a big truck or van for $20. Of course including miles, gas and insurance (if you need one) the cost goes up. But, I chose to use U-hauls because they are available everywhere.

 | PoorOldEdgarDerby (4) 06/27/2000 | Definitely overpriced and they screw you for every little thing. "Did you clean it out entirely?" $10. "Did you use any blankets?" $10. "Did you breathe while you were in the vehicle?" $10 U-Haul air charge. Get the point? It may not even be the money it's the annoyance of the whole procedure and feeling like they're screwing you at every corner. I'd rather have them just say " we'll charge you for each item you use in the truck etc. or here is a flat fee and you can do whatever you want, it's not as high as being charged individually but somewhere in between" I bet people would be inclined to just pay for the flat fee and not feel like they've got Big Brother standing over them.
