"One For The Angels" 4

I concur. One of the more poignant ones, and Ed Wynn is excellent. For me, the most moving scene was at the tail-end as Mr. Death tells Lou that he made it (to Heaven), and the two walk down the street where Lou did his pitches - letting the viewer know that a void had just been created and that that street wouldn't be the same without Lou.

one of the sweet episodes. a nice man who sells stuff out of his trunk.is visited by Mr.Death. he is informed that he will be taken later that day. he is not ready and says he wants to make sale of a lifetime before he goes and he does not know when that will be. He is a sweet man who loves children. when a little girl is hit by a car on his block mr Death says he will take her instead. now the salesman does the sales pitch of a lifetime to MR. death so the time of death for the girl passes. Now mr. death cannot take the little girl and nice salesman trades and goes with Mr. Death instead. a sweet tale of sacrifice.

One of my all time favorite Twilight Zone episodes. A true classic and one of the few tearjerkers in the series.

Ed Wynn is great in the lead role, and Serling's writing is top-notch. One of my favourite episodes.

A wonderful little story about a life which is common to many of us. A number of people go through life and while they are good people who are loved by many, they never achieve that one shining moment, that one big success, or as Andy Warhole put it, their fifteen minutes of fame. Such a man is Lewis J Bookman (Ed Wynn). He is a man in his 60s who is a fixture in the neighborhood of a nameless city. His occupation is a pitchman; a man with a suitcase that has folding legs and he stands on the sidewalk and sells matches, spools of thread, neckties, and other small items one might use around the house. A pitchman's success depends on his ability to sell, to convince the potential customer that he or she is being offered a bargain unlike any other, and one that is likely to never come along again. The biggest success in Bookman's life is the fact that he is loved by the children in the neighborhood. He is their friend, he repairs their broken toys, and because he never married or had any children of his own, he has a lifetime of love stored in his heart. His biggest fan is a little girl named Maggie (Dana Dillaway) who lives in his apartment building. Then one day on a hot July afternoon Mr Bookman receives a visit from Mr Death (Murray Hamilton) who tells him that his time on Earth is finished and he is to accompany him into the afterlife. Naturally Bookman does not want to go and asks if there is any way the trip can be delayed. He doesn't qualify for most of the accepted reasons but he finds a loophole when he tells Mr Death that he has some unfinished business of an important nature. It would mean a great deal to him if he could make a pitch......but not just any pitch. He wants to make that one big pitch, a pitch so big that it would make the heavens open up, a pitch for the angels as Bookman described it. Seeing how much this means to him, Mr Death agrees that Bookman may remain on Earth until he makes his pitch but then discovers that Bookman has no intention of ever making a pitch again. Forced to take a soul by midnight, Mr Death causes Maggie to be hit by a truck and her life hangs in question as she lays in her bed. At quarter to twelve that night Bookman meets Mr Death on the steps outside of the tenement building. He sets up his suitcase for a late night sale and begins to give his pitch to Mr Death, knowing that in fifteen minutes he must be inside to claim Maggie's soul. Mr Death is almost mesmerized as Bookman pitches imitation silk neckties and spools of thread. As time passes Mr Death cannot resist anything that Bookman is selling. His clothes have become disheveled, his hair is messed up and sweat pours down his face as he buys everything that Bookman has to offer. The final item that Bookman offers for sale is himself, a man servant, to be used in any way he sees fit. I offer you me, Lewis J Bookman. He eats little, he sleeps little, resting only occasionally and all parts are guaranteed to be 100% interchangeable and with that, the clock strikes midnight. Mr Death stands up and exclaims It's midnight! It's midnight and you made me miss my appointment! Mr Death goes on to say That was a most persuasive pitch Mr Bookman, an excellent pitch. The doctor comes out of the building and announces that Maggie will recover. Upon hearing that, Bookman realizes that his dream has been fulfilled. He gave that important pitch for the angels, made even more important because the pitch was made to the angel of death. Accepting his fate, they start to walk down the street when Bookman goes back for his suitcase and says You never know when someone might need something up there. He pauses and asks Up there? Mr Death answers Yes, up there Mr Bookman. You made it. The story ends with Mr Death and Bookman, suitcase in hand, walking down the street. One of the great aspects of the Twilight Zone was that it told stories of love in many forms with many different players. In the case of One For The Angels it touched our hearts with an old man's love for a child and a greater unseen love that allowed a dream to come true. In the end Lewis J Bookman was a success, having given a pitch that was bigger and more important than he had ever expected. As Twilight Zone episodes go, this is truly one for the angels.

This one is quite touching, with some gentle humor and gentle sadness mixed in. Ultimately, it's the story of an older man who has a great love for people, and for children in particular. The only drawback is that it seems unfair that Mr. Death would come for him when he was only 69 years old and still healthy and productive. Ed Wynn played the part well.

Great episode with Ed Wynn's 'sweet but savvy' persona used to best advantage.
