I think Tony must have come about and had his heyday during my early childhood. Back then it seemed they tried to sell you on things based on a kind of Superman premise - truth, justice and the American way all wraped up in an almost supernatural strength. Probably cold war jitters disguised as post war pride if you cared to delve into the psychology. Apparently this cartoon character with the booming voice worked well with enough Boomer kids to assure that this sugar laden cereal would be around over 40 years later.

I can vaguely remember sending in some coupon from one of the Frosted Flakes cereal boxes and getting a plastic drinking cup shaped like Tony the Tiger. Wonder whatever happened to it; I'd probably be able to sell it on ebay for something. I remember the cereal as corn flakes coated with sugar. No wonder I vacillated between hyperactivity and near-somnambulism when I was a kid.

I'll never understand the logic that decided a predatory carnivore was the ideal pitchman for a cereal.......And if you want to understand why tigers are an endangered species, watch a bunch of these commercials.Theyrrrrrrrrrr terrrrrrrible.

Even though I didn't like Frosted Flakes, I did like the commercials.

It is still one of the "kids" ceral I will eat. The man behind the voice is why I still like it, Thurl Ravenscroft. To hear him sing the classic "You're a mean one, Mr. Grinch" makes Tony sound that much better. And I have heard "there g-r-r-r-r-reat" for so many years that it is now part of me.
