This depends on the company, a lot of people were left with nothing when all the dot coms went belly up. If your are working for a well established company you can end up with a very nice portfolio.

More than anything, encourages people to go there, to work. Have never seen this as an option to doing well in a business.

My personal fave. . .thanks to this perk I travelled to a few places. If the company does well, then I do well. How much more incentive do I need? It also promotes employees making sure that everyone is on the job.

Ownership is a big deal. If you own a piece, even a tiny piece. of the place you work for, I think it does make a difference in wanting to go the extra mile.
