I liked him;but somehow, my biggest memory of him is the Yankees against Koufax and Drysdale in the '63 World Series. So I generally think of him as 'Chairman of Leader Dogs for the Blind.'

He was a great big game pitcher. Casey Stengel didn't use Whitey every four or five days, like most pitchers. He saved him for big games, sometimes he'd pitch on a week or 10 days rest. It's funny that Mantle and Billy Martin got a reputation for carousing and drinking too much. It was Whitey who called all the social shots for the whole clique. He was a great manipulator, on and off the field.

When he was piling up World Series wins for the pinstripers, this name really suited him.
