08/06/2005 | Ok, its not a major league in the sense of the NFL, but this is a great nickname. It refers to the Ottawa Rough Riders (who have since folded and been reborn as the Renegades) in one of the many years they were struggling with poor attendance and revenues. One of Ottawa's major landmarks is the Rideau Canal. Ottawa, that year was a tough, tough competitor, that overcame their financial difficulties to win the league championship.
It may not be a big league, but its a big league nickname.
