Certainly true, I can't picture Martin in a graduation gown and tassels- or writing a thesis about the dietary habits of crosseyed single mothers in the Paleolithic, though he was certainly street smart. Paranoid indeed, but a very effective manager- the type who could radically improve a bad club before wearing out his welcome quickly.

He nailed this.

I think Martin may have been the most paranoid man to manage successfully in the major leagues.

He was so convinced that everyone was out to get him that he spent his time trying to invent defenses from the attacks he assumed would be made against him.

What made him a great manager (at times) was his realization that those defenses were in themselves attacks.

Probably the best head-case manager in baseball history.
