It's great to see a historical series of games receive such reverence. The original AoE was very good indeed for its time and was feverishly accurate in simulating real events in the ancient world. Though it had a few niggling bugs like farm management (you built them and after a while they simply blew up making replacing them an annoying hassle). AoE II fixed this and improved on the original in many ways as well as having medieval motif. Age of Mythology fixed all previous bugs and introduced Greek, Norse and Egyptian mythology to the fore, it was of course jolly good fun. A lot of strategy series end up changing the best bits of the previous titles in their attempts to be innovative. In contrast the Age of series only incrementally improves on its original doctrine making each incarnation more fun then the last.
