Today is January 26. On this date in history in 1986, the Chicago Bears won Superbowl XX in New Orleans. The Bears beat the Patriots 46-10, and set Super Bowl records for sacks (7) and fewest rushing yards allowed (7). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Bowl_XX

When you have the best defense ever, arguably the best running back ever, and give up about ten points in the playoffs and Super Bowl, how are you not the greatest? The only thing Da Bears were missing was a great passing game.

Yeah, they were great... for 19 games. I can't put them on the same level as teams that dominated football for anywhere from 4 to 8 years. The Bears caught lightning in a bottle for one season. After 1985, Jim McMahon did very little after, William Perry was just an overweight defensive lineman, and others faded into obscurity. Mike Singeltary, Walter Payton, and a couple of others went on and did what they had been doing anyway, but as a team the '85 Bears were a flash in the pan.

A team that was so powerful it sometimes seemed that they'd dropped down from a higher league. They weren't a dynasty in the sense of the Packers and Steelers and Niners, but for one year they were unbelievable.

They shut out the great offense of the Rams and the next year SB cahmps in the Giants during the playoffs. Gave up one field goal to the pats due to an early fumble. ANd one TD in garbage time since they were leading by the biggest SB margin ever to that point in history. How many teams in history have completely shut-down every team in the playoffs? Teams were AFRAID of the Bears D! And many people that argue against them being the BEST ever say their offense was a weak point. I agree the offense was overshadowed by the defense. But they still had one of the greatest RB and O-Lines ever. And BEST team is overall. Defense wins championships. And I truly believe the 85 Bears D would have shut down any offense in the history of the game. They were that dominant!!

As a Niner fan it pains me to admit it, but for one year this was the best, most dominant, most fearsome,(any other superlative that means great)team I ever saw. But only for one year.

Despite the fact that Walter Payton was on the 1985 Chicago Bears, I'm not sold on their offensive capabilities. With that said, I have little doubt they were the most fearsome defense ever put together. The 1985 Chicago Bears featured some the greatest defensive players ever to compete on the gridiron. With players like Mike Singletary, Steve McMichaels and Superbowl MVP Richard Dent anchoring the defense, the Bears crushed opponents and humiliated the New England Patriots 46-10 in Superbowl XX. But in reference to this team being called the greatest ever? It was great, no doubt. But a great team has to have an even balance on both sides. Based on this, I'd say that the 1989 San Francisco 49ers, the 1978 Pittsburgh Steelers, and the 1972 Miami Dolphins were better.

I would agree with Darkstar, the Chicago Bears of 1985 were the greatest team I have seen in my lifetime. It is hard to compare decade to decade, but with the D they had, I cannot imagine anyone defeating this team.

Quite possibly the greatest teamof all time. They had the best defense ever, which led the league in every major category. To top it off, they tooled on the patriots in the superbowl, winning 46-10.
