A top flight but underrated movie centering on two fighters at pivotal points in their careers (Stacey Keach and Jeff Bridges). For fans of boxing, and especially fight fans from Southern California, the appearance of the late great boxer Art Aragon as Babe is an added treat. Aragon, a great fighter who fought in the 1940's and 1950's, but was never a champion died earlier this year. He has remained one Los Angeles most beloved fighter.

A brilliant piece of work. Stacey Keach is incredible as the broken down Tully, and the rest of the cast is equally strong. A fine script is complemented by crafted direction. One of the best boxing movies ever, topped, in my opinion, by Raging Bull.

Most boxing movies are about Champions. Fat City is about Losers-much closer to the everyday reality of boxing, since most contenders in the sport don't make it beyond 30, barely make a living, and end up with nothing more than a lifetime supply of physical pain and mental anguish for all their effort. Old boxer takes young contender under his wing, and tries at a comeback himself. Good portraits of 70s Californian skid-row characters, espcially the aging boxer's alcoholic girlfriend. Don't expect Rocky I-VI; Fat City is not about victory, it's about pain and despair. A good boxing movie nonetheless, one of the best in fact.
