"but that left hook to the body by Chavez is was probably the best in boxing, ever."Obviously Randyman never saw Pipino Cuevas' left hook to the body. While Chavez was very good at most of the things Duran could do in the ring Duran was better at all of them. Duran by KO in 10.

While I have great respect for both Duran and Chavez, Duran was so crafty I could actually picture him frustrating Chavez in early rounds. Duran had a way of getting into an opponent’s head, once this happened the fight was usually over. I can envision the referee stopping the fight in the 10th, and Duran the victor. Would have been a great fight!

I see this as a Chavez win unless Duran punched him in the balls after the bell.

Duran is the greatest lightweight who ever lived. Chavez is a great lightweight indeed, but he would have been in over his head against Stonehands. We saw how truly great Duran was when he rose in weight and met and defeated much larger men. That fight against Barkley in '89 was unbelievable. I can't see Chavez or any other fighter accomplishing that or even challenging Hagler the way Duran did. Chavez was a great counter-puncher. Duran was better. Chavez could punch. Duran could punch harder. Chavez was a technician. Duran was a better, more subtle, technician. Duran also matches Chavez'z body work and infighting, and when you toss in Duran's superior reflexes, speed, and ferocity, what have you got? Duran by late round stoppage or unanimous decision. Fire melts ice.

Probably the two biggest latin legends ever. Chavez turned pro the same year that Duran beat and lost to, Sugar Ray Leonard, in 1980. No doubt had they met each other in their primes it would have been a classic. Duran was probably craftier and would fight dirty when he needed to, but that left hook to the body by Chavez is was probably the best in boxing, ever. They both had incredible endurance. Hard to pick a winner, but I would give the edge to Duran.

Simply, this fight would have been one of the best. A fight between Roberto Duran and Julio Cesar Chavez at lightweight would have pitted two great legends at arguably their best. But I feel the 'Hands of Stone' had a bit more intangibles, and in a fight with the J.C. Superstar, he would have utilized his beautiful combination of power, speed and ring-savvy to hold back the inevitable counters. But both fighters possess heart, and as such, it would have been a non-stop slugfest between these two fighters (similar to the one shown by the Arturo Gatti vs. Mickey Ward trilogy). Likely, it would have been a razor-thin, close decision. But Duran likely would have prevailed based on every conceivable notion.

according to many fight trainers, including emile griffiths' tainer, roberto duran is pound for pound the best ever fighter. he stopped chasing the running scared leonard in the 'no mas' fight. so duran in his prime unbeatable!

what a great fight this would be,2 legends, chavez had a tendency to start slow, and i think this would cost him against duran.i see chavez winning 5 of the lasy 7 rounds in a bloodbath, but durans early lead plus underatted handspeed would be enough to win by close 15 round decision in the fight of the century.

Roberto Duran would of knock out Julio Cesar Chavez before the 12 round Duran would have been a little quicker and had better punching power.

Chavez was probably the best-and most comparible 135-pound champ to follow Duran,in terms of style and ability. He won the title by taking out the very dangerous Edwin Rosario,in a beautiful boxing performance but didn't remain there long. Duran was nearly flawless at 135;his only loss being a non-title decision to the great Esteban DeJesus, whom Duran destroyed twice in rematches for the title. When Chavez moved up to 140,he never really solved his DeJesus-Frankie Randall(although,he apparently won a solid decision in their final rematch in Mexico). In any case, there would be no apparent style difficulties for either guy in this one and it would have to be a helluva fight.
