With Aaron Pryor vs. Alexis Arguello being the greatest lightweight fights in the 1980s, Salvador Sanchez vs. Alexis Arguello would have surpassed both- and perhaps stand by itself as one for the ages. Sanchez, who was only 23, was not even at his prime when he was killed in an automobile accident in 1982. But based on their great individual performances, I would have given the slightest edge to Arguello (however barely). Yet, had this fight happened in due course time, it simply would have been impossible to predict the final outcome. Poetically, we are left to ask ourselves What if? as it is the greatest lightweight fight that never happened. Certainly, boxing afficionados were robbed of this probable gem of a fight

2 classy fighters,i think at lightweight arguello had to much power for the great sanchez,as good as sanchez looked against gomez and nelson he took alot of punches and gomez was moving up in weight.arguello would beat him by tko in the 12th

This is a fight that was on the bargaining table when Sanchez died. There is no doubt in my mind that this would have been a ring classic. Arguello definately had the bigger punch, but he did have trouble with fighters with good lateral movement, which Sanchez did have, among other things. We missed out on a great fight.

Sanchez never fought at lightweight. This would have been a classic featherweight matchup though.

If Salvador Sanchez hadn't died tragically in an auto accident, he and Arguello would've been without question, one helluva classic.Sanchez died in '82,the year Arguello won the lightweight title.Sanchez destroyed Wilfredo Gomez and although,he was reportedly getting ready for a pointless rematch-considering the results of their first fight and there was really not much to gain by hanging around at 126. Arguello would've had an edge in punching power, but so what;Danny Lopez hit as hard as anybody and Sanchez was simply too much for him. Aside from power,Arguello was upset and outboxed by Vilomar Fernandez-and it's difficult to not see Sanchez present Arguello with similar problems.
