Putting him on a Top 40 list is an affront to anyone who knows anything about music.

 | Krinda (11) 09/07/2006 | I was really surprised to see Woody Guthrie's name included in POP/ROCK. Makes absolutely no sense. That aside, he was a good, good human being, who gave his entire life to human rights issues. It is important to read his lyrics -- of all his songs. He is American History itself. He was and still is one of my heroes, and I am honored that my parents and he knew one another.

 | TritonAgain (0) 04/08/2003 | Timeless songs, important message, gifted artist. Easily one of the greatest singer/songwriters of the 20th Century, and one of the few artists who actually did make a difference in the world.

 | WilShakes1 (0) 01/20/2003 | Not actually a rock/pop artist, though it's possible he might have been if he were alive and working today. Strongly influenced Dylan, Springsteen and others; the punk movement and all singers of protest songs during Vietnam and after owe a debt to Guthrie's work.

 | ellajedlicka21 (5) 10/29/2001 | His influence is shown all the way up to Bob Dylan. He was probably the only one to speak out for political and social change at a juncture in history where that was basically unheard of by simple folk singers.

 | MedgarEvers (14) 09/15/2001 | Woody Guthrie, and the other originals proved that you could protest against the issues of the day (in the 1940's-50's, it was World War II, communism, the Dust Bowls, city life, etc.) with a guitar, voice, and some pretty clever poetry. Learning that he was a huge influence to Dylan (my hero) got me interested in Guthrie. If you look at the inspirations for a lot of the rock 'n' rollers, you see Woody, Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, and that gang. I think the world of songs like "This Land is Your Land," "Pastures of Plenty," "Hobo's Lullaby" (though he didn't write it, it was his favorite song and one of mine- download it!), "Do-Re-Mi," "Deportee" (download this one too!- Dolly Parton did a good rendition), etc. How can you deny the greatness of lines like this: "There's a man across the ocean and I guess you know him well, his name is Adolf Hitler and damn his soul to hell, we'll kick him in the Panzers and put 'em on the run, that'll be the biggest thing that man has ever done." I think he might be better off on the country musicians/groups list.

 | magellan (160) 11/01/2000 | The classic American folk artist. Check out Wilco / Billy Bragg's Mermaid Avenue albums to hear modernized versions of Guthrie's songs - he is a hell of a song writer. Also, Woody Guthrie is the the father of Arlo Guthrie of Alice's Restaurant fame.
