I tried this whole on a vacation to Prague. You can't go to the Czech Republic and not try a Pilsner. I am glad I only had a few sips. I thought it was really gross. It has a really strong after taste and I couldn't shake it for a while. If you like fruity drinks or light flavors this is not for you!

Pilsner Urquell is the prototypical pilsner. To be honest, I am not much of a pilsner person myself. I tend to prefer lagers and darker beers. Pilsners are generally smooth and light in consistency with a taste I can only describe as "beer-y." I would say Pilsner Urquell has a "crisp" taste.

The apprx. 22 oz. bottle I had was terrible. Though it may have been skunked. My one dog that eats anything would not touch the half-oz. I poured in his food dish. Update 4-5-08:
Have to do a new review based on a fresh pint can I had recently. No skunk fumes in this one. A really fine, smooth Pilsner. A bit subtle for most "hop-heads" it is a very refreshing pour. Light, crisp, clean. Well recommended for hot weather when something light is called for.

12oz bottle slight skunky aroma bitter beginning with a smooth aftertaste. Good but an average beer

I've drunk it and not complained about it. I don't know if that's the sort of endorsement that you would put on a label though.I suspect though that this is Chalkey Studebaker's beer of choice since its named after his favourite TV Character from Family Matters.
Doctor of Madness 02/12/2009
A very well made beer. Not a ton of flavor, but what's there is good.

Yum

no real opinion on this one... so I'll go OK
James430 08/08/2008
Strongest pilsner I have tried.

Never had it...

A beer for eastern Europe just a tolerable beer, too expensive. If you want to spend money try s/th for Belgium.
Jennifer132 06/11/2008
had it once, never liked it.
myspace-213814142 06/05/2008
ok, honestly... I haven't tried it but it doesn't look to appealing.
g8rhoo 05/31/2008
I'll have to try one...I can't remember if I like it or not.
BobTheBeerDrin ker 05/15/2008
This is simply the best Pilsner I've ever had, and that's saying a lot. Actually it's my favorite beer in the world. It is pricey, but on special occasions I'll always go out and get Pilsner Urquell.

This is a delightful beer that is brewed in the Czech Republic and is available in the U.S. It has just the right amout of hops without being bitter. It is not overbearing with its hops like the American beers Sweetwater 420 and Palmetto Pale Amber. Pilsner Urquell is in my top 4 beers; rated.
CanadaSucks 03/22/2008
Decent blond beer. . .goes down well, but nothing to shout about. . .one of those beers you can order to make yourself seem smarter than you really are, but just an average beer on this terrific list. A very drinkable three bordering on a four. . .
Automatt 02/11/2008
Another excellent pilsner -- the original pilsner, in fact.

Excellent.

I've only tasted this one a few times but I can say I did enjoy it.
sperryc 11/14/2007
I rarely drink pilsners, so I'm not a huge fan.
CzechMate 11/14/2007
A solid pilsner from the country that established pilsners...call it a stronger lager, very good.
zuchinibut 10/29/2007
Its rare that I find a beer that I don't like, and I was excited to try Pilsner Urquell. I had heard it was great, yet I completely hated it. It made me feel sick to drink it. I've been able to drink it since when others have bought it and there were no other choices. However, if Pilsner Urquell is an option, it is likely that there are more beers available that I would much rather drink.
riderofwaes 09/23/2007
Definetly a tasty brew. Not my favorite pilsner, but a very refreshing one.
mfisher520 08/22/2007
Loved this while at the Beer Garden in Queens!

It has that distinct Czech flavor. One of my favorites.
GenghisTheHun 12/26/2006
Pilsner Urquell is much better, it seems to me, since the Commies have left Central Europe.
helmut 12/14/2006
The original Pilsner, and very illustrative of the style. Not exceptionally flavorful, but nice aroma a nice beer nonetheless.
NOLApro 09/09/2006
Good quality brew. Definitely worth buying.
PowerBen5000 08/26/2005
Ok, I'm probably a bit prejudiced since I had a bad experience with this beer. First of all, it really shouldn't come in a green bottle. Green bottles allow more sunlight in and the beer skunkifies faster. I think this is what happened to me as I decided to try it one day, and I drank one quarter of a bottle and threw the other five bottles away. And I am a guy who hates to waste beer. It's possible that the batch I received wasn't fresh, so I'll have to try this on tap later and update my review. But it'll be a while given my bad experience with this one.
westy 04/20/2005
My favorite beer. Gives a good bite on the sides of your tongue. Lighter than other good beers. More refreshing than darker beers but more tastey than similar light beers.
lorne 03/05/2005
the one and only pilsner, every other pilsner is just a clone, never had a pils better than this.
Theodore J. Stalla 02/21/2005
The original pilsner from Plzen (Pilsen), Czechoslovakia. Sometimes it's difficult to improve on the original.
greenbreeze 02/20/2005
one of the world's best

I just had my first beer. My bartender has a lot of explaining to do.

Pilsner Urquell: the cause of, and solution to, all of my problems. D'OH! (Thanks, Homer).
deemo 10/27/2004
A true pilsner beer but somewhat of an aquired taste - it is a very hoppy for some but overall good balanced flavor once you get used to this type of beer.
irishgit 10/19/2004
Decent. Gets over-rated by some, but it is a dependable pilsner, pleasant and welcome in my fridge.
Guava Monkey 04/02/2004
As an ale drinker I'd rate this the best of lagers Ive tasted. Dunno what but it's not as good as it was 5-10 years ago. Lost something in mass production. Still, very pleasant on a hot summer's day
froggy10 03/18/2004
It's gone from pretty good to ok now. They've lost the taste in going with the mass production for some reason. Definitely not as good as before. They must be cutting corners or something. I'd say it's just below Stella Artois.
BeanoCook 02/15/2004
Now that it is mass produced, it is the best mass produced beer in the world.
melott 02/12/2004
World's greatest beer. Oldest beer in the world originating in the 13th Century.
pd 02/09/2004
Not the best beer in the Czech Republic, but that's saying a lot, for a lager fan.
hendo 08/19/2003
Absolutely the best beer in the world. It goes down smooth, unlike 90% of the microbrews out there, but it's not watered-down like the mass-produced domestics. This is what beer is supposed to taste like.
Moosekarloff 06/05/2003
A well crafted beer and certaintly refreshing, but a tad too skunky for my taste.
beershrine 04/23/2003
Excellent beer. If I can just find a fresh sample...
seamrog 02/10/2003
One of the worst tasting beers I've tried. Attractive look, but it tastes like the peas and carrots they served in the school cafeteria. Like all beers I dislike, I tried it twice and had the same impression.
Cynical Sam 02/20/2002
Although I personally like this beer, I must in all fairness say that it's an acquired taste. It has a very hoppy taste to it that some might find objectionable. It's also somewhat pricey, and there are other beers that I think are much better that don't cost quite as much. I have gotten a few bottles of Urquell that had a skunky taste, a phenomenon that according to an acquaintance in the brewing industry is quite common in beers in green or clear bottles.
magellan 02/04/2002
A very tasty Czech beer. Not too heavy, with a nice dry finish. The perfect beer when you are not up for a heavy ale, but need a little more flavor than a lager.
