02/21/2005 | Many homeless people do need small amounts of money to get by, so this can be a helpful act. And if a tourist or anybody else wants to give away their money, then that should be their choice.

02/20/2005 |  Hilarious. I'll tell you a few things about homelessness in America and the results may be shocking. A report gathered from thousands of interviews with homeless people states that 44% of homeless people surveyed had worked in the past month (and most had tried to get work) and 33% of those surveyed were military veterans. The vast majority of people did NOT become homeless because of laziness or whatever, they became homeless because they were kicked out by their partner or their own family, made redundant from their job or simply having the misfortune to come from a background so poor they couldn't even get a high school diploma. Homeless people aren't sub-humans, that is semi-sentient ignorance, they're PEOPLE fallen upon hard times and suffering horribly. The report also found that when homeless people get housing assistance and needed services, such as health care, substance abuse treatment, mental health services, education and job training, the vast majority end their homeless status and move to an improved living situation. I think the real solution to homelessness is obvious.

02/19/2005 | I did that when I was 10 years old. We took a trip to Belgium and I gave some of my allowance to a homeless individual on the streets because I felt sorry for him. My parents (who are very conservative) didn't fine me for doing it. They gave me 10 spankings because I didn't work for that money. (I was a naughty kid anyway). ... But I'm sure there are places around the world that do institute fines who give $$ to the homeless. Here in the US, you can get fined and/or arrested for picking up a prostitute.

02/19/2005 | Tourists think they're helping the homeless by giving them handouts, when in fact they're encouraging it. If they didn't get handouts, 1) they would stop harassing everyone, 2) they would be forced to look for work, or 3) they would leave the city.
