Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274) 5

Almost prenaturally proficient in philosophy--one of the foundation builders of modern Western Society.

Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274) 5

Easily one of the most influential philosophers in world history. Aquinas, building upon Aristole's metaphysics within the context of Catholic Natural Law principles developed numerous theories of moral application that are still argued within today. His theory of double effect in Summa Theologica and just war theory are both contemporary standards upon which actions are debated. He theorized about the division of powers within government as a precursor to ours and suggested that a government that encompassed all types of governments within one unit would be the best government. Exceptionally precient and underrated.

Spent an intimate semester with Aquinas and Agustine during a class on medieval philosophy. After having to read Augustine go on for 20 pages about how sinful eating an apple is in The City of God, Aquinas was a breath of fresh air. An accessible writer, Aquinas was most interested in making things clear during a period of epistimological debate over Aristotelian philosophy and Christian dogma. His two books, On the Eternity of the World and On the Unicity of the Intellect against the Averroists directly deal with making faith and reason compatible in a time of European history when the Church ruled with an iron fist. (Trust me, you did not want to cross Pope Innocent the III. Just ask the Cathars). Another nice thing about Aquinas is his clear, focused Latin. Much easier to read than many of his predacessors like Celsus or Boethius.

Compiled a tally of evidence for and against the existance of God (The first person famous for doing this). This showed evidence slightly in favour of God. Although some of the evidence then against has now been found in favour and some of the evidence in favour has now been found to be against. Some of the points he gave for were his own prejudices drumed into him. The evidence after present corections is still slightly (just a little bit more) in favour. Doctor of the Church (This means that he could explain spiritual mysteries not prsented in the Bible or if it is unclear on the problem. The explanations are done simply in a way that almost anyone can understand). Communicated with God. His politics is Liberal-Nationalist. One of the most popular philosophers amoung Christians and was canonised a Saint.

The Angelic Doctor is a philosophical colossus. The breath and depth of his writing overshadows all that came before and after him.

Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274) 5

St. Thomas Aquinas helped lead mankind back to engagement with the real world, after so much of the preceding centuries saw an inherent disconnect between the city of man, and the city of God. His application of the lessons of Aristotle to theological questions were a pivotal point in Western history.
